Job summary
Applications are invited for Clinical Fellow posts in Paediatric Cardiorespiratory Intensive Care and High dependency Unit with start dates available in September 2025 and March 2026. This post is for 6 months in the first instance, with a possible extension for up to a maximum of 23 months, by mutual consent. This post is suitable for anaesthetists, paediatricians, paediatric cardiologists, or trainees with adult intensive care background wishing to gain further experience in the management of critically ill children with cardiorespiratory problems. Applicants for the Clinical Fellow post are expected to have at least 1 years' experience in Paediatric/adult intensive care and full MRCPCH or equivalent. Applications from Medical Training Initiative (MTI) applicants are welcome. The post may become a cross site role in the future, with some working at the Evelina site.
Main duties of the job
Working closely with other members of the clinical team (surgeons / cardiologists / respirologists / anaesthetists), the applicant will be expected to provide clinical care for all patients receiving intensive / high-dependency care at Royal Brompton Hospital. They will be fully involved with the investigation of patients by both invasive and non-invasive techniques. There will be opportunities for instruction and experience in paediatric intensive care, appropriate to the clinical fellow's prior experience The Clinical Fellows are responsible for the supervision and teaching of the SHO's in their duties. They will normally be required to attend weekly meetings (see Timetable and Education for details).
Two consultant-led ward rounds are held daily and the Fellow shares the responsibilities for these business and teaching rounds.

A fundamental strength is its close collaboration on basic science research with the National Heart and Lung Institute. The Paediatric Cardiothoracic ICU admits close to 700 children per year with over 400 postoperative cardiopulmonary bypass cases. The posts offer a wide range of experience within the specialised area of Cardiorespiratory Care including the management and follow up of critically ill children. There is an active integrated teaching programme, and post holders are strongly encouraged to attend the established teaching programmes in the Paediatric Cardiology and Respiratory departments. Specific training needs of candidates can be accommodated within the PICU and associated paediatric sub-specialities. Research and audit activity is strongly encouraged and supported.
