Senior Clinical Research Nurse

Job summary

We are advertising for a dynamic and compassionate Research Nurse to join our PET Centre - Imaging CRF Research team.

The role includes a spectrum of research and clinical tasks including recruiting and obtaining consent, conducting pre- and post-PET assessments, interviewing and supporting patients and their families; preparing patients for their scan, phlebotomy, performing physiological observations, e.g. ECG, analysis of blood specimens; administering drugs, monitoring patients during and after their scan; performing data entry and assisting in the analysis and interpretation of trial data.

Further responsibility will include monitoring and raising the standard of care input within the team. The post holder will be instrumental in implementing team objectives to enhance the performance and development of the team.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Research Nurse will be responsible for the nursing needs of the PET Centre's imaging research programmes. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring that all aspects of the PET Centre's Clinical Research activities are planned and undertaken in a manner that safeguards the well-being of the patients in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trial) Regulations 2004 as well as the Amended Regulations 2006.

The research nurse may contribute to the development of trial design by incorporating the patients' and nurses' perspectives. Liaison with pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions during trial development will be required. The post holder will work with a high level of autonomy, taking delegated responsibility from clinicians (including PIs) for clinical decision making, and taking a leading role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating expert nursing care for clinical research applications.

  • NMC Level One Registration Registered General Nurse - Adult
  • Educated to degree level in a health related or social sciences discipline
  • Professional knowledge acquired at degree level supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to master's level equivalent.

Desirable

  • A relevant post graduate qualification in a research area involving patients or service users

Previous experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of working within an NHS environment, preferably including in a research role
  • Experience in clinical trials, teaching and mentoring as demonstrated by individual portfolio.
  • Able to clearly demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current UK clinical trial regulations, good clinical practice and the Declaration of Helsinki 1996
  • Experience of being able to facilitate and undertake R&D activities as major job component
  • Be able to undertake research and lead clinical audit in own area

Desirable

  • Experience of working within an Imaging Department
  • Experience of facilitating the gaining of Ethical and NHS permissions for a range of funded health related projects
  • Experience of working as a research practitioner within the NIHR Research Delivery Networks (RDN)
