The Consultant reports to the Clinical Lead for Infectious Diseases and is responsible through the Clinical Lead and the Director of Infection (Dr Nick Price) to the Chief Executive (Dr Ian Abbs) for the satisfactory performance of their duties.

The post-holder will join 3 existing Infection consultants at Guys' Hospital, with the post being offered initially as a locum.

The intention is to convert the role to a substantive post in 2026, which would be part of a rotatingID/microbiology post between Guys, RBH and Harefield hospitals.

The post holder will provide the infection support for the Guy's hospital site, though the post is part of a rotation that supports routine clinical infection work at Guy's, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

Whilst individual consultants will develop their own areas of specialist expertise over time, all will deliver:

o Ward-based infection consults and telephone advice on the diagnosis, management and prevention of infection.

o Timetabled multi-disciplinary clinical meetings and ward rounds.

o ID outpatient clinics in close conjunction with the sub-specialist service.

o There is a potential to develop a new OPAT service for RBHH sites.

If CCT in Microbiology or Virology there would be an expectation to support the Infection Sciences laboratory services.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the induction and training of the StRs rotating to Microbiology/Infectious Diseases/Virology.

Work closely with clinical teams, pharmacists and the IPC nursing team.

All consultants will have PA allocation for specific responsibilities e.g. antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, OPAT.

The post-holder will participate in the non-resident on-call rota which will be shared equally with the other consultants.

About us

The Directorate of Infection (DoI) comprises clinical, laboratory, infection prevention and control and surveillance services covering Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, the Evelina children's hospital, Harefield and the Royal Brompton. A defining characteristic of the service model we have striven to develop is seamless integration of these distinct but complementary clinical disciplines in order to deliver the highest-quality patient care.

The DoI comprises about 115 clinical and administrative staff from the Dept. ofInfectious Diseases (including the Virology & Microbiology laboratories run in partnership with Synnovis UK and Ireland) and the Dept. of Infection Prevention & Control. Dr Nicholas Price is the Clinical Director and joint-Director of IPC (DIPC) and Ms Avey Bhatia, Chief Nurse, has Executive IPC responsibility. Dr Bill Newsholme (Infectious Diseases & IPC) and Dr Simon Goldenberg (Laboratories) are the medical Service Leads.

There are approximately 60 IPC staff led by joint-DIPC, Dr Jon Otter, plus a dedicated ID pharmacy team. Every DoI consultant works in partnership with IPC colleagues and is allocated specific responsibilities in job planning. ID consultant leadership is by example and is considered essential to driving higher standards of IPC quality across and lending front-line credibility.

  • The post holder will provide the infection support for the Guys hospital site, though the post is part of a rotation that supports routine clinical infection work at Guys, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. The clinical Infection sub-specialties at Guys include:

    o Infections in patients with cancer. Guys Hospital is the SE sector regional hub for Cancer including medical, clinical and surgical oncology (the new Cancer Centre opened in 2016) and has a large malignant and non-malignant haematology service.

    o Infections in Renal Transplant and Urology services. Guys has an active kidney and pancreas transplant programme supporting the sector and is the hub for renal services and dialysis providing for a dialysis population of approx. 900 in 8 satellite units.

    o A proposed centre of excellence for complex elective orthopaedic and spinal services is under development having been commissioned as SE sector hub for joint revision surgery.

    o The site also houses the regional Thoracic surgical, Head and Neck and ENT and Urology surgical groups.

    o There is a well-established OPAT team providing OPAT services for Guys and St Thomas patients, with expanding links into the South East London virtual ward initiative.

Laboratory duties will include result authorisation, contribution to the day-to-day running of the diagnostic service, troubleshooting of unexpected results and active participation in laboratory management and development. Alongside existing RBHH and GSTT, and KCH and PRUH, consultant colleagues they will also support the transfer of work to the new large, multi-hospital offsite laboratory hub in 2024.

    The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the induction and training of the StRs rotating to Microbiology/Infectious Diseases/Virology, to take an active part in postgraduate teaching and training and participate in KCL Medical School undergraduate teaching in years 2 and 3.

Essential

  • Full and Specialist GMC Registration and current licence to practise.
