Job responsibilities
This Fellowship post is designed to support a surgicalFY3-ST8 who wishes to make a commitment to education as part of their career. This is a twelve month out of programme post aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, develop and deliver surgical training courses and undertake supervised educational research.
Due to increasing pressure on surgical training from the introduction of the European Working Time Directive and the resulting shortened training times, increasing resident numbers and the impact of emergency/on-call commitments on training within the limitations of the EWTD, there is a need to consider alternative methods of training. Simulation in surgical training allows a safe environment to practice procedures and develop experience.
There is a demand for high quality surgical simulation courses to augment the standard surgical training currently offered. To date we have through SaIL, introduced several technical and non-technical skills-based courses. The role of the Surgical Simulation Fellow will be to extend the current service, develop and deliver a variety of new training courses. Some of this training will be for in-house trainees at no cost to them while other courses will be required to generate revenue to support the service and contribute to its long-term viability.
