Job summary
This is a 50:50 Clinical:Education fellow post as a secondment or OOPE for existing specialty trainees on a NHSE deanery training programme. The clinical component of the job will be based within the Critical Care department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The educational component is varied and will comprise of work with the London School of ICM and with the education leads at GSTT Critical Care department. The London School of ICM is developing its expansive simulation programme, while various educational projects are ongoing within the GSTT Critical Care department.
Main duties of the job
The post holders will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust to include:
(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

The Critical Care department at GSTT has an international reputation for clinical excellence. As well as serving the local population we provide tertiary critical care to South East London, South East England and nationally. The ICU provides all modalities of multi-organ support and monitoring and use state-of-the-art technology. The ICU has a comprehensive electronic health record and a prominent research profile.
The critical care directorate comprises six clinical areas at the St Thomas' site. There are level 3 beds in the East Wing of the hospital (15 on EW1 ICU, 15 on EW2 ICU and 11 on EW6 ICU), an overnight intensive recovery unit (11 level 3 beds staffed by anaesthetists), a medical/surgical HDU on East Wing level 10 (15 level 2 beds) and cardiovascular surgical HDU (5 level 2 beds) on East Wing level 8. At the Guy's site, there are 13 level 2/3 beds on the Guys Critical Care Unit (GCCU).

The ICU Education fellows will provide either day time (0830 2130) or night time cover to critical care patients (2030 0930) in the general critical care units or critical care outreach for 50% of their allocated time. The remaining 50% of allocated time will be spent undertaking educational activities. Fellows will work on average 48 hours per week.

The post holder will work with their Supervisor(s) to fulfil the aims of the post. They will be expected to work with other relevant Fellows and the Head of School, Training Programme Directors, and other relevant personnel and trainers within the STC. Any ongoing out-of-hours clinical work will continue to be supervised by their local consultants.
Supervision will be under Dr Charlotte Anderson, Head of school; and Dr David Melia, TPD for Simulation.
The appointee will undertake the following work:
- Maximising training opportunities ongoing review to understand and map the learning resources and opportunities at different hospital sites. This will require visits to hospital sites, different simulation courses and assessing the repertoire of training available at each site.
- To develop the simulation training programme across London
- To identify opportunities to use the available resources and gaps in learning.
- Create a road map of simulation training with SMART targets
- Evaluation and educational research of the simulation programme
- Add to and revise existing resources
- Work across multiple organisational and multi-disciplinary boundaries.
- Evaluate the resources developed
- Work towards delivering a Maternal Medicine/obstetric emergencies learning package
The post would be suitable for candidates wishing to undertake it on a Less Than Full Time (LTFT) basis, and with appropriate notice and terms, could be utilised as a Special Skills Year (SSY) within the ICM Programme.
