B7 Occupational Therapist - Outpatient and Inpatient Renal Services

We have an exciting Band 7 opportunity to join our Renal and Urology Occupational Therapy Service. The main focus of this role is to work on the outpatient dialysis unit at Guy's Hospital, with one to two days per week providing senior support to the inpatient renal wards at Guy's hospital, allowing for flexibility across the patient pathway.

This outpatient service supports renal patients with symptoms related to both disease and treatment effects. The role provides flexible and holistic specialist Occupational Therapy input to meet the symptom management and rehabilitation needs of this patient group, improving functional wellbeing and quality of life.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist with excellent communication skills to manage a varied and engaging role. You should be motivated to support ongoing developments within this forward-thinking service, helping us lead the way in defining the Occupational Therapy role in renal rehabilitation. Part of this specialist position will include working with the team to enhance and develop the service in line with key developments, national priorities, and guidance.

We would encourage Occupational Therapist working in different specialities with transferrable skills and an interest in this area of work to apply.

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibility of the post is to oversee the Occupational Therapy caseload for patients receiving treatment on the outpatient dialysis unit at Guy's Hospital. This includes working with patients experiencing symptoms related to both the disease and its treatments, addressing their rehabilitation and supportive care needs to optimise functional and emotional wellbeing, safety at home, and treatment outcomes. The role will involve developing specialist skills to address symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, breathlessness, and cognitive changes. Part of this work includes supporting patients to develop meaningful and mindful habits and hobbies--both whilst on the unit and at home--which can help improve patient experience, quality of life, and tolerance of treatment.

From an inpatient perspective the post involves supporting the inpatient renal OT team, working closely with the other senior specialist Occupational Therapist to ensure the assessment and rehabilitation needs of patients with complex conditions are met. This will include providing supervision, and guidance to junior members of the service with their own caseloads.

About us

We have a wide-ranging in-service core teaching programme, and our ethos is supportive of further professional development within this area. This post will allow you to develop and utilise your specialist clinical skills in the management of people with complex health and rehabilitation needs, while offering an excellent opportunity to broaden and strengthen your leadership, and service development skills. You will also have opportunity to participate in wider local and national agendas for renal care.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK's best known hospitals - Guy's, St Thomas', Evelina London Children's Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield - as well as community services in Lambeth and Southwark, all with a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation.
