Job summary

Applications are invited for a LTFT Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Palliative Medicine at the Evelina London Children's Hospital. This would be at 0.6WTE for 6 months. The clinical fellow will join the existing multi-disciplinary team (Team members include Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, a pharmacist and administrators) and will provide medical care to children and young people within the Evelina London as well as across the South East of England.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical care for patients with a life-limiting or life-threatening illness, they will support in the management of complex symptoms and will support care at the end of a patient's life. The post holder will gain Complex Paediatric Palliative Care experience in the context of a "Non-malignant" caseload which includes exposure to sub-specialties such as Neurology, Metabolic medicine, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Cardiology as well as Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care. This post will be suitable for OOPT and the training opportunities available are similar to those for ST6-8 with an associated study leave budget and educational supervision. There are many opportunities to be involved with quality improvement and education work and the post-holder will be fully supported by an educational supervisor.

Applicants should be ST4-ST8 or equivalent. The post holder will be part of a EWTD compliant non-resident on call service, providing phone advice and support.

Essential

  • MRCPCH or equivalent

Desirable

  • Formal training in Paediatric Palliative Care (such as Post grad certificate, diploma or higher)

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • At least 3 years of experience at ST1-3-level in paediatric, including 6 months neonatology (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Previous paediatric experience at ST4-8 level in the UK, (or equivalent)
  • Experience in the management of palliative care patients
  • Experience in breaking bad news
  • Experience in the management of difficult ethical decisions

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Level 3 Child protection training
  • Paediatric life support training (APLS/EPLS or equivalent).
  • Evidence of experience in communicating difficult news

Desirable

  • Undertaken quality improvement work or service development
