Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated, experienced practitioner psychologist to the multi-disciplinary cardiac rehabilitation service at Guy's and St Thomas'. This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding psychology service within cardiology. You will provide assessment, therapeutic interventions, educational consultations and psychological support to people that have experienced a cardiac event and have mental health/ psychological difficulties in relation to their event and/or management of their condition. The provision of 1:1 and group evidence-based psychological interventions to promote psychological well-being in physical health is a key requirement.

In addition to direct patient contact, you will have the opportunity to contribute more broadly to the strategic development and delivery of cardiac psychology services. You may also have the opportunity to provide supervision to trainee psychologists and postgraduate students.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the systematic provision of a high quality, safe and highly specialist psychology service for the cardiac rehabilitation service based at St Thomas' Hospital.

To work autonomously developing pathways for psychology across GSTT and the wider directorate engaging with multidisciplinary teams within and across services and directorate when appropriate.

To work within a stepped-care model managing demand for clinical service and reporting and making recommendations regarding service provision.

To develop and deliver group and individual therapy and also consider using technology to enhance engagement built in an effective and cost-effective model of care.

To offer psychological assessment and formulation led and evidence-based treatment to cardiac patients.

To provide supervision of trainee clinical psychologists and junior staff inter and multidisciplinary if required.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctorate level qualification in clinical psychology, counselling psychology or health psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS)
  • Eligibility for Chartered status with the BPS.
  • HCPC Registration as Practitioner Psychologist

Previous experience

Essential

  • Experience delivering highly skilled psychological assessments, interventions, follow-up and data monitoring across at least 2 populations utilising at least 2 therapeutic models including CBT.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of providing both group based and individual interventions using evidence based psychological approaches
  • Experience of providing professional and clinical supervision to qualified and pre-qualified psychologists or similar.
  • Experience of working as a qualified practitioner psychologist with a wide variety of client groups, and across the full range of clinical severity.
  • Experience in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups in various settings.
  • Experience of teaching and training other professionals in psychological concepts.

  • Advanced skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Highly developed communication skills, both written and verbally, with the ability to communicate complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS. This may require negotiating, persuading, motivating, training, reassuring others and demonstrating empathy.
  • Specialist knowledge in a minimum of two evidence based psychological interventions through supervised clinical practice and specialist training.
  • Significant experience and ability to undertake risk assessment of client in relation to self and others, and refer on to appropriate services as necessary.
  • Ability to supervise psychologists and psychology trainees having completed the relevant training.
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
  • Ability to work independently as an autonomous practitioner with appropriate level of clinical and managerial supervision.
