Job summary

The Specialist Physiotherapist (Band 6) will provide high-standard physiotherapy services in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation to outpatients at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The role includes clinical, educational, and service development responsibilities, working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient care. The post holder will also contribute to team management, professional development, and quality improvement initiatives.

This post would suit a Band 5 physiotherapist wishing to gain specific experience at a more senior level or an established Band 6 wishing to consolidate and develop their knowledge and skills in rehabilitation.

Main duties of the job

Independently assess and manage patients, including those with complex needs, using evidence-based practices to develop and implement personalized care plans.Coordinate multidisciplinary interventions, advising patients, carers, and healthcare staff.Ensure accurate patient record-keeping and manage risks associated with patient care.Evaluate and adjust practices to meet quality standards, participate in service improvement initiatives, implementing policy changes aimed at enhancing patient care. Supervise and coordinate daily activities of junior staff, students, and support staff.Contribute to in-service training programs and conduct appraisals, and competency assessments to ensure professional development.Organize caseloads, patient groups, and timetables for efficient delivery of care. Effectively manage interruptions and adapt to unpredictable work patterns, ensuring continuous service delivery.Communicate complex and sensitive information clearly to patients, families, and colleagues, including the use of interpreters when necessary.Provide education and training to patients, carers, and MDT to enhance understanding and improve care outcomes.Stay informed about national and local standards, ensuring best practices are followed.Adhere to policies regarding infection control, risk management, and manual handling.Ensure a safe working environment for patients, visitors, and staff, promoting health and safety at all times.

Job responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of the post-holders own work
  • To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations, and using clinical reasoning skills and knowledge of evidence based practice, to determine appropriate care plan utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options
  • To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of conditions including those with a complex presentation, with occasional guidance from specialist physiotherapists
  • To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive rehab plans.
  • To co-ordinate intervention which may include other disciplines; advises and educates patient/carers/relatives/other health professionals
  • To be responsible for maintenance of accurate written records using POMR system and use of computerised data collection and records and comprehensive progress and discharge reports to medical referrers as required by rotation

  • To participate in on-call and emergency duties as lone practitioner within the Trust
  • To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including manual handling techniques and therapeutic handling
