Job summary

This post offers an exciting opportunity to work in cystic fibrosis, focusing on cutting-edge diagnostic techniques, with the aim of obtaining a post graduate degree (PhD) from Imperial College London. It is ideally suited for a respiratory (adult or paediatric) trainee wishing to undertake Out of Programme (OOP) training in clinical research with a focus on advanced diagnostics and personalised medicine by developing and validating novel methods such as organoid technology. It could also suit gastroenterology trainees. This has been made possible by a CF Trust-Funded Development Award which includes world experts in CF organoid technology from Utrecht Medical Centre (UMC), Netherlands, and co-investigators from Kings College London, Imperial College London and Kings College Hospital. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to contribute to our highly successful Clinical Trials Team and experience all aspects of CF care, with its multi-disciplinary team approach.

Main duties of the job

This the predominant role of the post is research. The post holder will be supported towards obtaining a PhD degree from Imperial College London. As outlined above, the post holder will have the opportunity to develop and validate novel techniques, centred around organoid technology, to improve the diagnostic outcomes in CF and 'CF-like' conditions, including bronchiectasis. The role will include writing study protocols, submissions to ethics committees and ultimately completion of the research project, with supervisor support. The post holder will work collaboratively with other scientists from Kings College London and have direct support from experts from UMC, Netherlands.

Job responsibilities

Additional tasks/roles will include:

o Developing clinical expertise in organoid biopsy sampling, preparation and analysis. There will be an opportunity to learn some of the lab techniques, as indicated.

o Acquiring new clinical/research skills, such as nasal potential difference measurement and supporting the development of the intestinal current measurement service.

o Writing a PhD proposal, early/late stage reviews, regular reports and thesis.

o Acquiring transferable generic research skills, such as critical reading, data analysis, data interpretation, data presentation etc.

o Preparing for and attending regular research meetings

o Contributing to the clinical trials portfolio; working as a sub-investigator on commercial and academic clinical trials (e.g. study visits, recruitment, reviewing and grading adverse events; communicating closely with the principal investigator, and liaising with sponsors and Clinical Research Organisations)

o Studying for and obtaining Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification and consent training, as well as attending mandatory postgraduate degree training courses
