Specialist Lower Gastrointestinal (LGI) Surgical Dietitian post.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our GI surgery dietetic team at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust full-time (1.0 WTE). This is a permanent position.

The successful candidate will be part of the GI surgical team made up of a band 1.9 WTE 8A's, 2.5 WTE band 7's and 4.0 WTE band 6's. The post holder will support the delivery of a specialist dietetic service to LGI surgery for both in and out-patients.

Futhermore, this advert is to apply and interview to join a reserve list for any future Band 6 Specialist LGI Surgical Dietitian positions at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. We have frequent job opportunities available, and will recruit from this reserve list to fill a vacancy if a position becomes available within 3 months of original application.

Main duties of the job

The post will be focused particularly in the dietetic management of patients who have had LGI surgery (malignant and complex benign). You will need significant knowledge of nutrition support, GI surgery and/or oncology to deliver an expert dietetic service.

The important role of nutrition is valued and well recognised by the gastroenterology, medical and surgical teams.

Job responsibilities

  • To take responsibility for and manage a caseload of LGI patients receiving oral, enteral and parenteral nutritional support on the St Thomas Hospital site.
  • To undertake nutrition ward round weekly, reviewing a complex cohort of patients on parenteral nutrition as an integral part of the nutrition team.
  • To work closely with the surgical MDT to ensure seamless holistic care and monitoring of patients.
  • To attend and make an active contribution to both the surgical and Proactive care of Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) ward rounds weekly.
  • To support the ongoing monitoring and development of the LGI surgery Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP), including the development of new guidelines.
  • Form part of the GI surgery team, which includes upper and lower GI surgical teams.
  • To provide clinical cover for LGI dietetic clinics and home parenteral nutrition clinical in times of leave or absence.
  • To attend and make an active contribution to intestinal failure MDM, which is held on a weekly basis.
  • To provide LGI specific expert advice to clinicians, patients and carers regarding provision of nutritional support for patients based on clinical evidence. This will involve nutritional assessment, to include the calculation of nutritional requirements based on the interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometry clinical condition and other physical parameters.
  • To initiate and participate in regular research and audit in line with departmental and MDT procedures.
