Job summary
You are invited to apply for the Paediatric & Neonatal Surgery Clinical Research Fellow post. The post will be based in the Neonatal Unit (St. Thomas' Hospital site) and the Evelina London Children's Hospital.
Main duties of the job
There is a growing need for a surgical research presence to support the recruitment and data management of patients recruited to these studies and the post-holder will work in collaboration with the neonatal and surgical teams in helping to successfully deliver these clinical research projects. The post will be divided in a ratio of 60% clinical and 40% research. The successful candidate will have a named educational supervisor and will be exposed to both elective and emergency cases. The candidate will be expected to participate in all index neonatal cases. Elective clinical activity will be allocated according to experience. This will include elective day case operating at Lewisham Hospital and inpatient elective operating at Evelina London as well as outpatient clinics in both locations.
Previous paediatric surgical experience is essential but this need not be at middle grade level and an applicant with no previous registrar level experience would be well supported in making this step up in this post. The post would ideally suit a candidate wishing to enhance their experience before applying for specialist training in paediatric surgery. This is not a recognized training post but it attracts the same training opportunities, including study leave, named surgical educational supervisor and a very active educational programme. We have a good track record in successfully supporting trainees in gaining training numbers at subsequent application rounds.
About us
The post will be based in the Neonatal Unit (St. Thomas' Hospital site) and the Evelina London Children's Hospital where major elective surgery is carried out and emergency surgical patients are admitted, including neonatal surgical patients. Routine day case surgery is carried out at University Hospital Lewisham.
The department has a growing portfolio of clinical research, particularly in neonatal surgery. This includes locally and nationally funded research projects such as:
- TOAST (study on antacid prophylaxis in patients with oesophageal atresia) is coordinated by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit Clinical Trial Unit (NPEU CTU) at the University of Oxford and is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme.
- ToSCiN is collecting information about babies with stomas and the views of their parents and doctors in order to learn how to find out the best time to close babies' stomas. This study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme (Reference Number 128617).
- BIND, examining the relationship between severe inflammation in premature infants and subsequent neurodevelopment.
- FOPTI, a feasibility study developing novel imaging techniques in neonates.
