Job summary

The Genomic AI Network of Excellence is seeking a Clinical Lead to lead the clinical development and delivery of this newly formed entity, commissioned by NHS England to accelerate the adoption of AI in genomic medicine in the NHS.

The Clinical Lead will work with partners across the AI and genomic medicine ecosystems to build a community of clinical leadership and expertise, identifying key areas of practice, developing clinical delivery models, and generating the evidence required to support adoption of AI innovations in Genomics within the NHS. They will work closely with the Network Director and work package Clinical Leads to provide strategic direction and leadership across the Network's programmes of work.

It is an exciting time to join this innovative healthcare field as both genomics and AI gather pace across multiple areas of medicine. The post holder will have the opportunity to create meaningful impact in a new, cutting-edge genomics service in the NHS, leading on national and regional programmes to introduce innovative technologies for the benefit of patients. They will be an experienced leader of clinical change across multiple organisational boundaries, with an in depth understanding of the current AI and genomics environments, the challenges they face and the opportunities for innovation and change.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical leadership to the Genomic AI Network of Excellence
  • Provide strategic clinical support to the Network's work packages to support translational research and ensure the realisation of benefits
  • Strategically network, engage, and collaborate with AI and Genomics partners in NHS, academia, industry, and external agencies to deliver change
  • Work across the Network to identify national priority areas for clinical transformation and enable appropriate test beds to facilitate change
  • Support the acceleration and adoption of scalable AI clinical genomic pathways in the NHS through clinical oversight of collaborative translational research and implementation programmes to accelerate AI adoption
  • Support Work Packages to publish findings in academic journals, increasing the profile and evidence for the adoption of AI in Genomic Medicine
  • Maintain a working understanding of developments in the AI and Genomics environments, including technical and ethical challenges
  • Ensure the Network maintains a patient centred approach at its core, prioritising patient benefit in programme design and delivery
  • Ensure the Network's ongoing commitment to delivering equity of access across our diverse population

About us

NHS England have commissioned 8 NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence to leverage partnerships across the NHS, academia and industry to drive the introduction of genomic technologies. The Genomic AI Network of Excellence will operate at the intersection of genomic medicine, AI development, and translational research to accelerate the adoption of AI solutions into NHS genomic medicine services. The Network will:

  • Build a national community in AI & genomics, acting as a hub for engagement in the identification of unmet needs and the development of clinically deployable tools
  • Work in partnership with existing contributors in the AI and genomic medicine environment to collectively create the conditions necessary for the adoption of innovation
  • Inform and support nationally led solutions to address the distributed nature of NHS genomic informatics, producing frameworks for common approaches and solutions
  • Deliver exemplar translational research programmes to generate evidence for adoption, including data mining and natural language processing, variant interpretation, and AI deployment platforms
  • Build public and patient understanding of AI within genomic medicine

The Networks of Excellence are a new component of the existing NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), with delivery supported by GMS clinical and programme management resource. GAIN is co-hosted by theSouth East GMSand theCentral and South GMS. The Network Director post is hosted at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
