Job summary
The Department of General Surgery, (Upper Gastrointestinal, Thyroid and Endocrine,Colorectal and Emergency General Surgery) is situated on the St. Thomas site, withthe exception of some outpatient and diagnostic endoscopy facilities.

The Upper GI unit provides care for a wide range of benign and malignant Oesophago-Gastric conditions. The unit performs a high volume of benign upper GI surgery including anti-reflux surgery, revisional anti-reflux surgery, large paraoesophageal hernia repair, treatment of achalasia (surgical and POEM) and Laparoscopic cholecystectomy. There is a broad exposure to a range of emergency upper GI conditions including oesophageal perforation and incarcerated paraoesophageal herniae. The department is also the regional centre for oesophago-gastric cancer and performs a high volume of oesophageal and gastric resections. We are also a busy emergency general surgical department with a wide-ranging surgical take.
Main duties of the job
The post would suit someone wishing to gain broad experience across the field of UGI surgery (not HPB).The successful candidate will work primarily within the areas of benign UGI surgery and the Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR) and complex Hernia group, a well-recognised tertiary referral centre for complex hernias. They will to help deliver the benign upper GI and AWR MDM and gain experience in laparoscopic benign OG surgery, flexible endoscopy and complex hernia surgery, both open and minimally invasive. In addition there will be some experience in resectional surgery.
The successful candidate will help organise and deliver multi-disciplinary teaching in benign UGI surgery and will have an active role in educational activities. Your educational supervisor will be a consultant in benign UGI surgery who will help develop your clinical, teaching, research, and audit skills in this field.
Successful applicants will work with the admitting general surgical on-call teams, providing support both in the A&E Department, where appropriate, and on the wards. The post holder supports the Emergency General Surgical service through regular participation on a overnight rota with other clinical fellows.
