Maintenance Craftsperson - Building (Harefield Hospital)

Job summary

To diagnose and repair faults in carpentry, joinery and building fabric defects acrossthe buildings that the Trust own on the Harefield site and own or lease locally offsite. To carry out interior and exterior painting and decorating to a high standard,either alone or working as part of a multi skilled team.

To have flexibility in working with allied materials using basic building skills, i.e. floor covering repairs, painting, wall protection, ceiling tiles. Repair bed curtain rails and bedside lockers and other ward furniture, hang pictures, mirrors etc. Manufacture and repair Fire Doors.

Repair and maintain Sash windows. Repair wooden floors that may be defective. Undertake form work for concreting. Fix signs and notice boards to wards and offices. Install kitchen units and worktops in conjunction with other trades. Manufacture and repair Fire Doors. Select and set out timber for partitioning or other wooden structures. Carry out duties of a locksmith both in fitting and maintaining magnetic, digital and mechanical locks of all types and cut, programme or supply keys for same. Repair and/or replace site boundary wooden fencing.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake planned preventative maintenance or emergency work as demanded by a Hospital of this type and use all skills and knowledge to ensure safe methods of working and to carry out maintenance tasks in a safe and cost effective way for the Trust
  • To understand the workings of engineering services and systems and building structures in NHS/Trust premises. Ensuring that they are maintained to a high standard and that all plant and equipment are utilised in a safe and efficient manner
  • To carry out work as requested by management/supervision using the appropriate current works electronic docket/request system and ensuring that all associated paperwork is completed as required
  • To work as part of a departmental team and where necessary to support/assist the work of colleagues, and to be able to work with staff of all levels and disciplines throughout the trust
  • To provide maintenance service to all Trust buildings, and off site properties and be able to work unsupervised. To have a flexible approach to the work and be able to work beyond the normal hours of duty if required and to carry out other tasks from other disciplines should circumstances so dictate
  • To ensure work undertaken is completed in a timely manner and that appropriate records are updated through the requisite system
  • To keep up to date with any new legislation and attend training courses as directed, by Estates management.

  • Completion of a recognised and registered Apprenticeship in City & Guilds Certificate (NVQ Level2),Construction Industry Training Board (C.I.T.B.) or equivalent experience in Trade
  • City & Guilds Accredited Fire Door Inspection Certification

Desirable

  • City & Guilds Craft Certificate Advanced Craft (NVQ Level3)
  • A-Levels in relevant subjects.

Experience

Essential

  • Post apprenticeship training and be able to demonstrate competence in Building Services Maintenance, including fault finding
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • To understand fully the inter-relationship between the various maintenance crafts

Desirable

  • Good understanding of COSHH regulations

Skills

Essential

  • Sound knowledge of carpentry and joinery including both 1st and 2nd fixing and be skilled at maintenance of same.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and technical manuals
  • Ability to use both fixed woodworking machinery and portable power tools. Must be able to observe the Woodworking Machinery Regulations.
