Job summary

The Host Defence service cares for patients with chronic respiratory infection, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, bronchiectasis, fungal and non-tuberculosis mycobacterial infections. It is designated as one of four national centres to manage primary ciliary dyskinesia.

It has national and international recognition, providing specialised care for some of the largest global cohorts. It has an active research unit with multiple clinical trials and is involved in national and international guideline development and international collaborations.

Main duties of the job

To lead the specialist nurses within infection and immunology service and help develop the infection and immunology service together with the other team members and the clinical lead for the service.

Provide a service for all patients, including direct care and acting as a specialist resource when liaising with and facilitating the best use of all available services.

Act as an expert resource for all patients, giving advice, education and support that is appropriately planned to meet each individual's needs.

The successful applicant will lead a team currently compromising of 3 other clinical nurse specialists (2 band 7, 1 band 6) to provide the specialist nursing service for this department.

Job responsibilities

Work autonomously across professional, organisational and system boundaries and proactively develop and sustain new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes and healthcare delivery systems.

Provide a consultancy and clinical leadership function as required.

To undertake a wide range of advanced clinical interventions, which include a Non-Medical Prescriber course.

Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.

Triage patient queries providing antibiotic advice and organise sputum collection. Liaise with GPs to request oral antibiotics.

Provide advice to local hospitals regarding antibiotic choice for intravenous therapy.

Participate in Advance Care Planning and end of life care planning of both in-patients and outpatients, liaising with local services as necessary and working with the palliative care team to ensure that the patients and familys needs are met throughout.

Monitor patients receiving intravenous therapy at home arranging and checking aminoglycoside levels, arranging follow-up and line removal, making contact throughout the course for support and to answer queries.

Essential

  • 1st level registration with NMC
  • Mentorship from NMC or equivalent
  • Degree level education or equivalent
  • Be an independent prescriber according to the Trusts Non-medical prescribing policy
  • Post Registration with NMC qualification in the relevant speciality or equivalent

Desirable

  • Degree level education or working towards equivalent
  • A Masters level qualification/in progress or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced physical assessment skills
