Job summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Cancer CNS with a passion for coaching and training to apply for the role of Macmillan Cancer CNS Development Lead (CDL). This exciting new role is part of a pan-London pilot project which is funded by Macmillan and NHS England (Workforce, Training and Education). The pilot focuses on two key areas: attracting qualified nurses into Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) roles and accelerating the development of new CNSs.
The post holder will lead the local implementation of the CNS Development Lead Pilot Project within the Integrated Care System (ICS) and contribute to the strategic management and development of the project. By working closely with Trust Lead Cancer Nurses and fellow Macmillan CDL colleagues across London, the postholder will inspire and improve the development of the next generation of Cancer CNS workforce across the Capital. This is an autonomous senior role hosted by South East London Cancer Alliance providing system level planning, cross-organisational working and leadership for the local Cancer CNS workforce within South East London.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm, commitment and leadership that will support the development of aspirant and CNSs currently in post. They will have excellent clinical skills, recent experience, and a background knowledge of oncology nursing as well as a robust level of IT literacy.
This is a fixed term position for two years.
The post is full time, however applications will also be considered on a part time job share basis.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will scope and map the existing Cancer CNS workforce capabilities within SE London. They will use project management skills to deliver the pilot successfully. The postholder will play a lead influential role and will work with senior colleagues within SE London to advocate for cancer nurse career investments, including incorporating national ACCEND Capabilities framework and cancer nurse core key performance indicators (KPIs) into healthcare profiles and working to secure sustainable funding for core training opportunities.
This pilot places a high value on diversity and fairness. The role will encourage, engage and support aspiring CNSs from underrepresented groups into CNS roles. The postholder will develop and deliver outreach activities to increase the diversity of the Cancer CNS workforce, to be representative of the patient population communities. Working with Macmillan and SELCA, they will promote equitable access to recruitment opportunities, recognise and mitigate any inequalities including access for protected characteristics, providing reports to stakeholders on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion findings.
About us
The personalised cancer care programme in South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) is the host for the post, and the programme manager will provide operational management support. The small friendly team which has dedicated data analytics and patient involvement workstreams is available to support the post. South East London Cancer Alliance is hosted by Guys and St Thomas' NHS Trust and the office base is in London Bridge. The post will receive professional management and project leadership from the Lead Cancer Nurse at Kings College Hospital NHS Trust as a partnership arrangement with SELCA. The post-holder will have a base at SELCA and Kings but will also be required spend significant parts of their week across the hospital sites covered by the SE London secondary care providers.

The post holder will be a change agent with a strong professional and clinical focus and will contribute to facilitating a conducive work environment. Thereby the Macmillan CDL will contribute improving cancer CNS retention and experience as well as staff development.
The Macmillan CDL postholder will accelerate the development of newly appointed CNSs to become confident, autonomous professionals with a skill set that aligns with evolving cancer care.
