Full Time- 10 sessions per week and some additional sessions for On Call

Applications are invited for a position of Specialty Doctor in Cardiac Surgery with special interests in Minimally Invasive Surgery starting 2024 . The post will be for an initial period of six months with opportunities for extension and will be based at St. Thomas Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

To provide clinical services for cardiac surgery patients in support of the consultant surgeons. Duties will include training and mentoring of less experienced colleagues and other staff, participation in clinical audit and in clinical research projects. Clinical areas covered will mainly include theatres, wards, overnight intensive recovery unit and outpatients. To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Training Objectives: Competence in assessment of patients' suitability for minimally invasive cardiac surgery To be competent in choosing the most appropriate means of access for minimally invasive surgery To be competent in establishing peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass To be able to perform minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures under supervision, in particular aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair and replacement

Job responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities:

Clinical: The post-holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Cardiac Surgery services at St.Thomas Hospital, Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

Training of junior staff:The post-holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her that post-holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:The post-holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance:All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours:

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.

New Deal & European Working Time Directive (EWTD):

All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with both New Deal and EWTD guidelines.

Educational Programme:

Neither the London Deanery not the Royal College of Surgeons accredits this post for postgraduate training. However, the post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, research clubs etc.

All post-holders will be designated a professional development mentor from among the consultant surgeons with whom a professional development contract will be agreed and reviewed on a regular basis. Special levels of increased responsibility will be agreed for a post-holder in possession of CCT or CCST to improve his or her professional portfolio to encourage and assist application for consultant appointment. It is envisaged that there will be only one post CCT/CCST post-holder.

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
  • MB ChB or equivalent.

Desirable

  • MRCS or equivalent, higher degree
  • Final year of Cardiothoracic training and should have the FRCS (CTh) or MRCS/AFRCS or international equivalent.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Independent at routine cardiac surgery. A minimum of 200 cardiac cases as first operator are required to be considered for this post.
