Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Lane Fox Technical Services Team on our long term ventilation unit, supporting the acute ward alongside the community based patients.

The technical department provides a service to the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit, 14 beds and a 20-bedded weaning unit that opened on the East Surrey Hospital site in October 2014.

The service also supports a large population of patients (over 2000) in the community. These community patients require an external servicing programme run from Lane Fox , in conjunction with multi-disciplinary Home Assessment Clinics

Support to Paediatric respiratory and ventilation service, on PICU, Paediatric HDU and Lane Fox Junior

All are supported with a 24-hour technical back up on-call service.

Main duties of the job

To provide autonomous leadership of the Lane Fox Technical services.

To ensure all aspects of the clinical wards (Lane Fox Unit and Lane Fox Remeo) have sufficient technical support

To deliver the continuity of service for the community home ventilation service for both adults and paediatrics, including regular servicing and maintenance of respiratory equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

  1. Provides and performs highly complex specialist and advanced clinical and therapeutic procedures within Lane Fox, to adult patients from a range of specialities, suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders who present to Lane Fox.
  2. Has expert knowledge of critical care technology and service provision and co-ordinates all Lane Fox Technology Services, providing expert advice and guidance to technologists, consultants, doctors and nurses within the department and the Evelina Childrens Hospital.
  3. Responsible for the allocation and deployment of technologists manpower to provide routine maintenance and complex diagnostics including: Point of care devices, blood gas machines and analysis, Oximetry / transcutaneous CO2, studies, ventilators, monitoring, transport equipment
  4. Has a keen interest in new technologies and diagnostics and is able to evaluate their potential use and value to the current services offered.
  5. Provide expert clinical advice to doctors, nurses, patients and point of care team.
  6. Continually monitor and maintain high professional standards of the Lane Fox Technology services to patients and to initiate remedial action where necessary.
  7. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure services meet challenging healthcare needs.
  8. Provide visible high level leadership and support to Lane Fox technology staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.
  9. Initiate, participate, plan and implement policies.
  10. Plan, perform, interpret and provide reports on a wide range of physiological investigations to patients of all age groups, without supervision, employing current standard and specialised techniques, taking appropriate action where necessary.
  11. Initiate and participate with audit programmes.
  12. Drive and participate in departmental research and development programmes.
  13. Undertake continual professional development, appropriate to the range of Lane Fox technology services to patients.
  14. Accountable for all Lane Fox technology equipment and evaluation of equipment, ensuring they are in good working order, asset registered and regularly safety and function tested. In case of equipment failure, effectively communicate with the manufacturers and service contractors to minimise any interruption of service.
  15. Responsible for the procurement and commissioning of specialist, complex and expensive medical equipment.

Managerial/Leadership/Research

  1. Responsible for setting the direction of the department and devising the business plans in line with the long term goals of the department.
  2. Responsible for planning the skill mix and rotas for the department
  3. Provide operational management and leadership for Lane Fox technologists
  4. Provide line management for Lane Fox technologists, including monitoring of annual leave and sickness absence.
  5. Manage the day to day budget, authorised signatory and responsible for effective use of resources.
  6. Is a budget signatory for items totalling £25K?
  7. Undertake Responsibility for the efficient and effective management of physical resources
  8. Undertake responsibility for assessing, implementing and adapting to new clinical techniques and technologies.
  9. Undertake responsibility for the planning and organisation of information resources, ensuring effective and administrative patient reporting and data storage. This includes the archival of all relevant investigative data.
  10. Provide and maintain statistical information as required for statistical and other management purposes.
  11. Formulate the health and safety and quality assurance policies to patients, staff and visitors.
  12. Attend Trust, Regional and National meetings relating to issues of Service provision.
  13. Work collaboratively with senior managers and clinical colleagues in the formulation of strategic business plans
  14. Participate in Trust/Regional/National projects
  15. Responsible for recruitment, appointment and retention of all Lane Fox technologists in line with Trust policies and guidelines.
  16. Undertake responsibility for counselling, grievance, discipline and welfare matters and, where appropriate, implement disciplinary procedures.
