As well as serving the local population we provide tertiary critical care to the region. The units are equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring, point of care testing and a computer information system for charting, note-keeping and prescribing. All modalities of organ support are available.
The department comprises five clinical areas and currently totals 63 beds. On the St Thomas' site there are 30 level 3 beds in the East Wing of the hospital (15 on East Wing 1 and 15 on East Wing 2), an Overnight Intensive Recovery Unit (10 beds staffed by the Department of Anaesthesia), a 10 bedded mixed HDU on Victoria Ward, and a 4 bedded surgical HDU on Page ward. On the Guys site, there are 13 level 3 beds within Guys Critical Care Unit (GCCU).
Our case mix is challenging with a large proportion of complex medical and cardiothoracic patients. We are a Severe Respiratory Failure centre and opportunities are regularly available for experience in advanced techniques such as Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
