Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity within the Gastrointestinal Medicine and Surgery Directorate for an experienced nurse to join our Colorectal Nurse Practitioner Team at St Thomas's Hospital.

We are looking for an experienced practitioner to join the team for a full time, fixed term, 12 month secondment. The successful candidate will be skilled and knowledgeable in the field of colorectal surgery, feel comfortable communicating between patients, surgeons and others members of the MDT, as well as be confident working independently and within a team.

This role will provide expert specialist care to patients living with Lower Gastrointestinal conditions and malignancies, as they navigate our hospital and community services. It offers many opportunities for growth and professional development. You will gain experience in the management of complex patients, working closely with the surgical team on a daily basis.

You will be provided with professional development opportunities for career advancement. You will be supported to autonomously coordinate patient care throughout their surgical journey. The team is flexible and supportive of your educational and working needs, and facilitates a positive work culture.

The post is advertised as Band 7, pending experience and applicable postgraduate qualification is provided.

Main duties of the job

- Review Colorectal patients' charts and prepare surgical Consultant ward round documentation, and actively participate in ward round

- Routine advanced physical assessment of surgical patients, including history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations, and prescribing relevant medications

- Be involved in the care of perioperative patients in conjunction with the Enhanced Recovery team and POPS

- Coordinate care for complex surgical patients among different specialities and teams involved

- Act as resource to support ward staff and other teams including clinical guidance, teaching, and assist in complex situations.

- Actively participate in service improvement plans such as audits to help improve patient experience and outcomes
