Job summary
An opportunity, due to career progression , has arisen within the Nuclear Medicine Department for a Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist / Radiographer to join the multidisciplinary team at an exciting time. The service operates out of both Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals, providing diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging, osteoporosis screening and a comprehensive range of therapies. The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and perform clinical Nuclear Medicine procedures whilst providing a high level of patient care. You will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the patient experience are of the highest standard whilst adhering to appropriate legislation and Trust policy. As a Senior member of the team, you will act in a supervisory capacity providing direction, leadership and support to your colleagues. The successful candidate will have significant experience of Nuclear Medicine. The position will be varied and you will be expected to participate in all aspects of the service. You will be required to work in a timely, organised and caring manner to deliver the high quality, patient focused service that we expect. Participation in all aspects of Continuing Professional development is expected.Registration with the HCPC, the RCT, AHCS or other appropriate professional body is essential.
Fixed term A21 position for 12 months will be considered for suitable candidates who are in the process of applying for registration with the RCT/AHCS.
Main duties of the job
The Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist post is required to provide the highest quality clinical care whilst performing standard and complex Nuclear Medicine procedures and investigations.
As part of the position, the post holder will undertake a significant supervisory role, rota responsibilities and display leadership qualities. The post holder will be involved in performing a wide range of diagnostic procedures on patients of all ages, who are suffering from a wide range of illnesses including life threatening conditions and terminal illnesses, requiring empathy and skills to help patients through difficult and complex procedures. You will undertake advanced procedures including sentinel lymph node, radiosynovectomy and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy amongst many others using highly specialised equipment. Additional duties include decision, under protocol, on clinical images, leading stressing sessions and coordinating workflows through the different areas of the cross-site departments.
The post holder will be required to perform all investigations according to technical protocols described in the standard operating procedures with the scope to adapt techniques to difficult circumstances using one's professional judgement.
The post holder will be required to participate in the quality assurance programme within the department and ensure a safe working environment in accordance with local rules for radiation protection and Health and Safety.
About us
The Nuclear Medicine Service has revenue streams of ~£6.5M and an establishment of around 55 WTE. It is one of the largest nuclear medicine services in the country. The service operates out of both Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals, providing diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging, osteoporosis screening and a comprehensive range of nuclear medicine therapies. The department currently has 6 gamma cameras, including 3 SPECT/CTs, as well as a DEXA department at Guy's, with 2 scanners, and an additional scanner at St. Thomas' for paediatrics. The service is supported by its own Radiopharmacy and has an international reputation in teaching, publication, research and development.

- Perform all standard and complex Nuclear Medicine, SPECT/CT procedures using highly specialised equipment in a timely and accurate manner with due regard to the Health and Safety of self, staff and patients.
- To specialise and actively participate in one or more advanced areas of Nuclear Medicine, such as cardiac stressing, paediatric imaging, hybrid imaging etc.
- Ensure that all standard operating procedures, protocols and guidelines are adhered to by junior members of staff and students and that any adaptation of technique is technically and clinically justified.

- To be able to operate all hardware and software used in the department.
- To take responsibility for patient consent, identification and relevant clinical history taking prior to commencement of imaging in accordance with Trust and professional legislation.
- To undertake both routine and advanced administration of diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and advanced phlebotomy and laboratory skills.
- Provide clear instructions and descriptions of all procedures to staff, patients and relatives as necessary.
- To provide clinical information to the patient whilst interpreting, negotiating and adapting the procedure as appropriate.
- Optimally use all supporting and immobilisation devices on patients to achieve diagnostically accurate studies.
- To ensure that all images are of the highest diagnostic quality possible and that they are presented for reporting in timely and accurate manner.
