The Cardiovascular directorate at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is a large, tertiary centre for acute referrals, providing highly specialised treatments to patients of South East London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent. The three departments of Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery have 132 beds at the St Thomas' hub site, 5 cardiac catheter laboratories, 4 dedicated operating theatres and a vascular hybrid facility with integrated imaging. We are a leader for open, endovascular and hybrid treatment of patients with complex Vascular pathology.

Main duties of the job

This post provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring surgeons to gain invaluable hands on clinical training in both vascular/endovascular as well as cardiac surgery. They will be given protected time to attend both open and endovascular operating lists and will be trained in theatre by our dedicated team of surgeons. We have a large team of interventional radiologists and the post holder would also have the opportunity to attend these procedures and improve their diagnostic imaging interpretation skills. The post holder will also be trained in managing peri-operative patients within our dedicated vascular and cardiac high dependency units.

About us

The directorate would like to appoint one proactive and highly-motivated individual to join the Vascular service provided by the directorate. The post provides training in cardiovascular surgery to doctors who have completed their foundation years and are currently at FY3/CT1/CT2 (SHO) level. The Junior Fellow is part of a rolling 8-week rota that comprised open and endovascular operating sessions (which can include vascular and/or cardiac surgery), ward and outpatient sessions and on-call cover in vascular and cardiac surgery during the day and night. It is expected that by the end of the post, the applicant will have experience in both surgical disciplines.

Although not recognized as a training post by the London Deanery, this post is aimed at trainees seeking to improve their clinical, surgical and academic portfolio in readiness for applications to training programmes at Nodal Point 3 or higher.The post holder will rotate through the hybrid/open operating theatres andcardiovascular wards and contribute to the busy and exciting on-call rota. They will be encouraged to attend outpatients on a supernumerary basis for further clinical experience. The post holder will always be supported by a Registrar, Consultant and our Clinical Nurse Specialists at all times. In turn, they will be expected to support our Foundation Year 1 and 2 doctors.
