A fantastic opportunity as arisen in Alan Apley Ward for a Senior Nurse position.
We are currently looking for a dynamic, intuitive and experienced Band 6 to come and join our team. Ideally, the successful candidate will have Gastroenterology background as well as experience in managing staff and supporting colleagues on the ward.
Alan Apley is a busy but highly-rewarding 22 bedded ward in St Thomas' Hospital, with two dedicated teams - Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and Luminal(IBD).
Within the ward, we also run a dedicated Gastroenterology Day Unit (GDU), providing our patients with specialist follow up care, aiming to reduce A&E returns, improve quality of care and a better patient experience. In the GDU clinic we also do the induction of complex biologic infusions for our IBD patients, and manage Ascitic Drains for our Liver patients.
You will be provided with a local induction with our Professional Development Nursing (PDN) team, and with the relevant training to achieve the expectations for your role, such as Healthroster, Band 6 Study Day, Nurse in Charge Study day, PDR training, etc. We conduct Band 6 away days, where we can learn and share our experiences, fostering a culture of improvement and openness.

Main duties of the job
As a Senior Nurse, you will be utilising your time on the ward in both Clinical Practice and Managerial Roles. You will be able to spend time with patients, support new staff on the ward and nursing students, as well as having dedicated time to complete administrative duties.
Time and training will be provided, and you will be working alongside the Charge Nurse and the rest of the Senior Team as a way to develop management skills. You will be allocated a team of Nurses and Nursing Assistants, and will be responsible to conduct regular one-to-one conversations and PDRs with them.
Besides that you will be introduced to other admin tasks, such as complex rostering, performance managing, clinical audits, etc.
You will also be expected to be involved with the recruitment and selection process and full training will be offered. You will also be expected to look into incidents and learning that may arise from these.

- Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
- Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
- Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.
- Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
