Job summary
This is an innovative idea to give newly qualified or more experienced Physician Associates the chance to work across different areas of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. The PA will spend time within Trauma and Orthopaedics and will have Educational Supervision along with appraisal set by the CPD handbook for PA's. The role also has the scope to include exposure to Emergency Medicine and Clinical Education including simulation. There is the potential to rotate through different subspecialties with Orthopaedics at both Guy's and St Thomas' hospital sites.You will assess and examine patients, manage a specific caseload of patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment, whilst exercising a high level of professional judgment and expertise when delivering care. You will be supervised by a designated consultant and work alongside a highly-trained and committed team of doctors and nurses, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team within the Trust's policies and clinical guidelines.Successful applicants will undergo an induction programme to help them adapt their skills and knowledge to the service, under the supervision of the Physician Associate training consultant. Main duties of the job
The key duties and responsibilities will include:? Assess and examine orthopaedic patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings, form a list of differential diagnoses and recommend management/treatment accordingly.? Attend consultant and/or SpR ward rounds and provide continuing care for patients on their ward(s)? Coordinate patients on the management pathways related to their specialty.? Maintain timely and appropriate documentation.? Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to appropriate training and experience. About us
The Department of Orthopaedics provides trauma services on the St Thomas' Hospital site and elective services on the Guys site. There are currently 22 Consultants contributing to the delivery. We have effectively four adult orthopaedic wards (2 trauma and 2 elective). We also support paediatric trauma services but elective orthopaedic paediatrics is sited within another division. There are currently around 110 elective operative procedures performed each week.
The Orthopaedic department is a 24/7 service delivering high quality care to a variety of patient groups. Orthopaedics is a consultant led and delivered service, supported by training and non-training SpR, ST1/2 and FY1/2 grade doctors. 8 of the consultants form the Trauma on call rota. There is an active and ongoing teaching and education programme for junior medical staff, and monthly morbidity/mortality and clinical effectiveness meetings, which all staff are encouraged to attend.To support the existing staff, and to address changes in staffing levels, we have decide to expand by recruiting five Physician Associates to support the medical and nursing teams.
