Job summary

We are delighted to be in a position to advertise for a Public Health Assistant (PHA) within School Nursing, part of Evelina Community Services. This is a term time role currently based in our Southwark offices (Sunshine House and Aylesbury Health centre)

The successful candidate will join a team of PHAs who support the School Nurse teams to provide a seamless service to children and young people across mainstream schools in Lambeth and Southwark and for children and young people educated other than at school in Lambeth.

The team consists of service managers, qualified nurses, school nurses, and PHAs who are led by specialist school nurse team leaders.

As an ideal candidate, you would be organised and able to prioritise your work whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Strong communication skill would be valuable for this role. We're looking for someone who understands patient confidentiality although previous NHS experience is not essential, and you will receive training in the team until you have settled into your new role. Main duties of the job

You will be key to the smooth running of the School Nursing Service, acting as a vital team player in the National Child Measurement Programme. You will coordinate visiting schools to measure reception and Year 6 children, inputting data and creating height and weight results letters to send to parents.

You will promote Public Health in a variety of settings, supporting the School Nurses in doing so.

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the Public Health Assistant role and its purpose within the service; they are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake additional or alternative administrative duties and responsibilities commensurate with the level of the post, to support the smooth running of the service.

The PHA will connect children and families to resources within the borough that will promote early intervention, build resilience within young people and families, identify sources of stress and develop self-management approaches.

Main Duties

To provide clinical support to the School Nurse Team in a variety of settings for example, schools, health centres, Family Hubs, Youth centres, Childrens Centres.

With support from School Nurses, lead and deliver both group and individual health promotion sessions as part of The Lancaster Model in a variety of settings. These sessions may be group e.g. class assemblies or on a one to one basis.

Offer advice to parents and children on topics, for example healthy diet, bedwetting, oral hygiene.

To provide practical assistance to schools to support them promoting the health questionnaires at set stages for children and young people so they are successfully completed and entered on the portal.This promotion includes assemblies and liaison with school staff to facilitate questionnaire completion.

To deliver the National Childhood Measurement Programme health promotion sessions and weigh and measure children and enter results on our electronic database. Sessions will take place in a number of different locations and settings across Lambeth and Southwark.

Refer children with weight concerns for further specialist assessment. Call parents to discuss their childs measurements and offer first line advice and discuss a referral where required.

To undertake enuresis e-alarm clinics under the direction and supervision of the continence lead nurse.

To understand child protection issues relating to the safeguarding of vulnerable children and young people and document and report to the School Nurse issues of concern.

To observe and report accurately any unusual incidences/occurrences in the working environment to the School Nurse and other team members as appropriate.

To assist as appropriate with setting up and facilitating group work/workshops /assemblies for children and parents in conjunction with the School Nurse/Community Staff Nurse.To positively promote diversity in the work place and the community. Being mindful of needs of local children, young people and families, respecting everyone and treating them asindividuals regardless of background and tailoring approach to assist with engagement.
