Job summary
The purpose of the post is to learn how to perform echocardiography (echo) within the critical care department. The successful candidates would work with the ICU Echo Lead and cardiac physiologists to provide an echo service for the department, undertake echo related quality improvement, clinical governance, audit and research projects and assist with the departmental postgraduate echo education program.
This post is offered as a Fellowship in Critical Care Echocardiography for a period of one year with an option to extend to two years subject to satisfactory performance. The post is divided into two parts. Half of the time the post holder will be working closely with cardiac physiologists to learn how to perform echocardiograms in order to provide a departmental echo service and working on echo related projects. The other 50% the post holder is required to work a full on-call system delivering clinical care for our critical care units and outreach services.
The candidates would be expected to gain FUSIC Heart accreditation within the first 4 months alongside either BSE Level 1 or FUSIC HD by 6 months. By the end of the year the candidates should be scanning at a BSE Level 2 standard and working towards completion of BSE Level 2, ACCE or EDEC. Subject to performance there would be an option to extend the placement to a second year in order to complete BSE L2/ACCE and/or EDEC accreditation.
Main duties of the job
- Triaging daily critical care echo requests and with the assistance of a cardiac physiologist completing and reporting said studies.
- Working with the echo lead to complete quality improvement, clinical governance and research projects.
- Once trained to a standard of a FUSIC mentor contributing to the postgraduate echo training program
- Attending the weekly echo meeting and presenting at the Pan London Echo Grand Round.
- Completing FUSIC Heart (if not already completed) within 4 months of commencing the post. Completion of FUSIC HD or BSE Level 1 within 6 months (pending date of exam) and be scanning at a BSE level two standard by 12 months whilst working towards either BSE level 2, BSE ACCE or EDEC.

The ICU Echo fellows will provide either day time cover to the critical care patients (0830 2130), night time cover to critical care patients (2030 0930) or critical care outreach for 50% of their allocated time. The remaining 50% will be spent undertaking echo activities. Fellows will work on average 48 hours per week.
