Job summary

A rare opportunity has arisen to work within the world class paediatric respiratory department based at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London. We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist to provide 6 months maternity cover and join our multidisciplinary team who diagnose and treat the inherited condition Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be part of a highly specialist team of scientists and physiologists that perform nasal nitric oxide, nasal brushings, electron microscopy, cell culture, light microscopy and immunofluorescence for the diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD). The role will be based in the laboratories of both the Royal Brompton Hospital and Imperial College London and will involve performing tests on patients on the ward and in clinics. In-post training in these investigations will be provided.

About us

Due to complexity of PCD a multidisciplinary team approach is vital. The diagnostic team consists of a lead consultant, senior scientists, PCD scientists respiratory physiologists, nurse specialists and physiotherapists.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Communication

Communicate effectively with patients & parents at an age appropriate level.

Liaise closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team ensuring collaborative working practices & professionalism at all times

  • Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect

To undertake the following procedures listed under tests and procedures, with appropriate supervision.

Tests and procedures

  • Immunofluorescence on nasal ciliary brushings
  • Analysis of ciliary beat pattern and frequency by light microscopy
  • Maintenance of primary epithelial cell cultures
  • Preparation of cell maintenance media
  • Processing of nasal and bronchoscopy epithelial specimens for electron microscopy
  • Screening tests for PCD including nasal Nitric Oxide
  • Nasal ciliary brushings
  • Any other tests as deemed necessary by the head of the Department

To explain tests clearly to children in an age appropriate manner to enable them to perform physiological tests, working with the child, family & multi disciplinary team members to obtain accurate results & achieve best possible outcomes

To perform laboratory procedures accurately and reproducibly according to standard operating procedures

To analyse test data to produce accurate reports

To establish priorities for tests requested with the physician & liaising with members of the multi disciplinary team to meet requirements

To be responsible for maintenance, calibration & disinfection of equipment used

  • Service development

To implement departmental procedures & policies ensuring best practice at all times

To assist in development of departmental procedures & policies

To assist in research projects & audits within the paediatric respiratory department

  • Policy development

To implement the trust policies & protocols within the department

  • Resource management

Safe use of equipment involving routine calibration, maintenance, quality control, problem solving & reporting faults

To monitor stock levels and order non-stock items of supplies /equipment up to value of £5,000

To ensure all patient data is stored in a suitable manner adhering to trust information governance policy
