Job summary

Applications are invited for a post in the Oncology departments at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital. This post is available from 2nd January 2024 onward for a period of twelve months.

This post is designed to provide sub-specialty training in Brachytherapy and would suit a doctor with 7 complete years of postgraduate training (equivalent if overseas) or post CCT wanting further exposure to Brachytherapy (LDR and HDR) techniques prior to seeking a consultant clinical oncologist post. The current provision of brachytherapy services includes HDR brachytherapy for Gynaecological, oesophageal and skin cancers and LDR seed brachytherapy for prostate cancer. With the relocation of Brachytherapy service from St Thomas' Hospital to Guys Cancer there are plans to expand and introduce HDR brachytherapy to a range of tumour sites. We currently offer HDR brachytherapy for Gynaecological cancer ( MR guided brachytherapy), skin cancers, upper GI and prostate cancers. We plan to expand the HDR brachytherapy service to lower GI cancers, Lung, Head and Neck and bladder cancers in a phased manner. This post offers excellent training and research opportunities.

The candidate will be expected to carry out research and audit projects, service development and will be encouraged to present the results at national and international meetings.

Please note that successful completion of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is our accepted minimum language requirement.

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to brachytherapy service delivery.

  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care and to contribute to service developments.
  • To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training programmes.
  • To participate in research and audit activities within the Department and to establish and maintain the database of patients treated with brachytherapy

Guys Cancer Centre

Guy's and St Thomas' is a Joint Cancer Centre with King's College Hospital that offers a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of all adult cancers. Patients from across south east London attends for treatment which is not available at their local hospital. Radiotherapy

The Radiotherapy department at the cancer centre on Guys campus and the cancer centre at Queen Marys Hospital in Sidcup is equipped with 8 True Beam linacs (including one Stx unit with HDMLC), 3 CT simulators, 1 PET/CT and a new planning system. The Clinical Oncology Department at Guys and St Thomas offers a wide range of specialised radiotherapy techniques including; IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, 4D-RT, SABR, HDR brachytherapy, LDR seed brachytherapy, TSEBT, TBI and SRS.

Guys Cancer Centre is accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes and a Cancer Research UK centre by CRUK.

Duties and responsibilities

Training of junior staff:

The post holders will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holders has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:

The post holders will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Educational Programme:

Neither the London Deanery not the Royal College of Radiologists accredits this post for postgraduate training.
