Band 6 Stoma Care Nurse (Part Time 30 hrs p/w)
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the dedicated Stoma Care Team at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in a Band 6 . This post offers a unique chance for a motivated and compassionate nurse to develop specialist skills within a supportive and experienced team.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build expertise in stoma care, working closely with patients across both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, supporting individuals before and after stoma surgery, and helping them adapt to life with a stoma
The team prides itself on providing compassionate care, education, and ongoing support to patients and their families. As part of the service, you will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.

Main duties of the job
Patient Assessment & Care Planning
- Assess patients pre- and post-operatively (physical and psychological needs)
- Plan individualised stoma care
- Mark optimal stoma sites before surgery
Clinical Care & Management
- Provide specialist care for stomas and surrounding skin
- Manage complications (e.g. leakage, skin irritation, infection)
- Monitor healing and recovery after surgery
- Advise on appropriate stoma appliances and products
Patient Education & Support
- Teach patients how to care for their stoma independently.
- Provide guidance on:
- Hygiene and appliance use
- Diet and fluid intake
- Lifestyle adjustments (work, travel, relationships)
- Offer emotional and psychological support.
Discharge Planning & Follow-Up
- Ensure patients are confident before discharge
- Arrange community support and supplies
- Conduct follow-up clinics (hospital or community-based)
5. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Working
- Collaborate with:
- Surgeons
- Ward nurses
- Dietitians
- Community nurses
- Act as the stoma care expert within the team
Leadership & Service Development
- Support junior staff and provide training
- Contribute to improving stoma care services
Audit, Research & Governance
- Participate in clinical audits
- Ensure care meets evidence-based standards
- Report incidents and contribute to quality improvement
. Product & Supply Management
- Liaise with stoma product companies
- Ensure patients have access to appropriate equipment
- Stay updated on new products and innovations
