Consultant In Neurology

The closing date is 27 January 2026

Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Neurologist with a special interest in MS to join our existing team of Consultants and Specialist Nurses to support the Neurology service provided across the West of Berkshire.

For newly qualified applicants, a second on-call senior neurologist will be rostered until the new starter is fully established in the consultant role.

Main duties of the job

This post represents an addition to enhance the Neurology Services across the West of Berkshire and in particular help meet the rising demand for neurology clinic appointments. This post is full-time (10PA).

This post entails a substantial commitment to the delivery of specialist MS care in Reading. We have over 450 patients currently receiving disease-modifying therapies under the supervision of our current MS consultant (Dr Emie Pabeau) and three MS CNSs. We have close working relationships with the regional MS service based in Oxford. The post includes 1PA of dedicated research time. We believe that all patients should be given the opportunity to participate in clinical trials, and therefore our ambition is for the RBH to become an independent research site with our consultants acting as principal investigators (PIs).

Applicants who are unable to work full-time for personal reasons are invited to apply, as are those wishing to job share. Applicants are required to hold a CCT in Neurology or be within six months of accreditation by the interview date.

About us

The medical team consists of six consultants and an Associate Specialist along with a specialist trainee from the Oxford Rotation and 3 GPwER's. There is a large team of ten specialist nurses led by a nurse consultant who provide support in individual disease areas. Approximately 10,000 patients are seen in an outpatient setting per year. In keeping with the Trust's aim of providing care closer to home, clinics are provided at the Royal Berkshire Hospital but also in facilities in Henley, Bracknell, Newbury and Wokingham. There is also increasing provision of video-clinics. Nerve conduction studies and EMG are provided the neurologists in-house and in-sourced from a third-party provider, with complex cases being referred to the John Radcliffe hospital, Oxford. Adult EEG (including ambulatory recordings) is now provided at the Royal Berkshire hospital by a highly specialized clinical physiologist with consultant reports being provided remotely. There is a full range of imaging services and a weekly meeting with the neuro-radiologists.
