Senior Medicines Value Pharmacy Technician

Are you a Pharmacy Technician with a passion for medicines optimisation and making every pound count for patients and the NHS?

We're looking for a Band 6 Senior Medicines Management and Medicines Value Pharmacy Technician to support our medicines value programme, focusing on high-cost drugs, biosimilars, and cost-effective prescribing. This is a new post that will help deliver value for money in medicines prescribing.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical expertise to medicines optimisation and switch projects

  • Monitor adherence to pathways, protocols, and formulary choices

  • Maintain accurate switch tracking systems and ensure robust data reporting

  • Act as the first point of contact for the biosimilar patient helpline

  • Work with prescribers and pharmacy teams to resolve medicines supply or usage issues

  • Contribute to audits, assurance returns, and governance reports

  • Support the development of operational policies to improve efficiency and safety

You'll need to be a GPhC-registered Pharmacy Technician with strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred medicines management services across the Trust. Working closely with senior pharmacists and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • To work collaboratively with pharmacists and the wider medicines optimisation team to deliver safe, effective, and value-based use of medicines across the Trust.

  • To coordinate governance and documentation processes for biosimilar switches and other medicines optimisation initiatives.

  • To provide day-to-day operational leadership for the medicines value service, including managing patient support helplines, data systems, and audit activities.

  • To contribute to service development by identifying opportunities for efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality improvement in medicines use.

  • To line manage and develop a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician, ensuring high professional standards and personal growth.

  • Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician through Technician membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • NVQ level 3, BTEC, or recognised equivalent qualification which will comply with the General Pharmaceutical Council's requirements for Registered Pharmacy Technicians
  • Educational Supervisor, Practice Supervisor, Internal Verifier, NVQ assessor qualification or equivalent.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Leadership or Management Experience
  • Educational Supervisor, Practice Supervisor, Internal Verifier, NVQ assessor qualification or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-registration experience in medicines management / optimisation roles
  • Experience of leading / supporting medicines savings or switch programmes (e.g. biosimilar).
  • Previous experience supervising or line-managing direct reports including appraisal
  • Experience of implementing new services and procedures
  • Experience of working with staff and organisations external to Pharmacy
  • Handling non-routine/complex issues and applying judgement
  • Experience in audit, KPI monitoring, performance reporting
  • Experience in governance processes, policy/SOP maintenance, or audit
