Job summary

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Registered Midwife to work with the Maternity team in a job share as joint Band 7 Lead Diabetes Midwife working part-time 15 hours/week, providing midwifery leadership and direct Line management of the dedicated Midwifery Diabetes team.

They will also work closely with MDT to provide the highest standard of care to all women/Birthing people with long-standing and gestational diabetes in pregnancy to achieve the best outcomes for the mothers and babies. They will have the expertise to advise and manage diabetes, starting and adjusting medication when required, having an sound understanding of different methods of managing Diabetes including Diet, Metformin, insulin, intermittent/continuous Glucose Monitoring and Insulin pumps.

They will provide expect knowledge and teaching on all aspects of Diabetes in pregnancy to both the people in their caseload and the staff within Maternity.

The successful applicant will also participate in the Midwifery manager on call night rota, to provide professional Midwifery advice/support to colleagues out of hours.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure the Diabetes service, is in line national best practice recommendations, creating and adapting guidelines as necessary.
  • Provide midwifery support in specialist Diabetes clinic, both independently and as part of the MDT including Obstetric and Endocrine Consultants.
  • Ensure all necessary referrals are completed in a timely manner.
  • Collate and report audit findings to the National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit (NPID)
  • Ensuring that the maternity Diabetes Service is adequately covered at all times for women with diabetes in pregnancy, providing individual support and advice to the women and their families.
  • Confidently manage individual cases of diabetes, advising, managing and prescribing medication (on Midwifery PGD, or as non-medical prescriber) as required.
  • Coordinating plans of care where women are receiving care from multiple specialties/agencies and ensure all plans for woman/neonate are clearly documented and communicated with the wider maternity team as appropriate

The Maternity unit deliver just under 5000 babies a year. We provide care for a diverse population across West Berkshire. Part of our maternity strategy is equity in access and outcomes tackling the multiple dimensions that affect local healthcare inequalities.

The unit comprises of a delivery suite, midwife led birth centre, postnatal and antenatal wards, outpatients and Day Assessment Unit. We have a very successful home birth service, specialist teams to support vulnerable women and continuity of care teams.

We have developed a 'seeking sanctuary ' service which is a mutidisciplinary approach to providing care to pregnant women seeking sanctuary in the UK and their families. This service was presented as good practice in the NHS three year delivery plan.

We have an established joint led services for rainbow, bereavement, diabetes, fetal medicine, pre term birth.
