This post is funded by HEE to support upskilling and retention of registered nurses working in critical care settings in Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The post is fixed term with funding for a 0.2wte (30 hours per month) post over an 8 month period. Consideration will be given to all applications; please feel free to book an informal conversation with either the ICU Nurse Consultant Melanie Gager or ICU PNA Lead, Helen McCarthy.
Main duties of the job
The PNA is a new professional clinical leadership and advocacy role introduced to deploy the A-EQUIP model for the multi-professional team. The role supports staff through a continuous improvement process that builds personal and professional clinical leadership, improves the quality of care delivered and supports professional revalidation.

Professional Supervisory Role
- Support Registered Nurses to identify their own personal action for quality improvement
- Deliver Restorative Clinical supervision programme for staff
- The post holder will use their understanding of personal and professional resilience and support others to develop this attribute
- Ensure that there is a strong interface between the PNA and clinical governance
- Provide support to Registered Nurses and Nursing Associates in sharing of good practice learnt through the Matron assurance framework and risk management processes with the aim of reducing the incidence of harm
- Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice through a variety of ways for example audit, working clinically with those who require additional support and development and to support the wider PNA team to gain understanding of how this can be delivered from within their role as PNA
- Act as a role model at all times and promote a high standard of safe and effective care which is based upon best evidence
- Utilisation of agreed metrics to demonstrate on going added value of the role of Professional Nurse Advocate(PNA) and monitoring outcomes for staff and patients e.g. reduction in complaints, improved satisfaction surveys, reduction in sickness absence for Registered Nurses and improved retention of Registered Nurses
- Identify and collate quantitative and qualitative data to inform the development of reports regarding the process, impact and outcome of the PNA role and the A-EQUIP model
