Job summary
This is a replacement, substantive 10 PA post for a Consultant in Otolaryngology with interest in Head and Neck and Paediatric ENT to join a well-established and ambitious department, driving forward new models of patient care in the post COVID era. The post is based in the Royal Berkshire Hospital with peripheral clinics in Bracknell, Henley or Newbury. The post requires general ENT skills and experience with a specialist interest in Head and Neck and ENT Paediatrics. We would also expect experience in academic ENT research to compliment and further the department's ambitions to expand its translational research portfolio with the University of Reading.
The successful applicant will support the current delivery of adult and paediatric ENT care, including contribution to the development of these services at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching, education and research.
The interview process for this post will consist of a simulation assessment on the 22nd April 2024 followed by a panel interview on the 10th May 2024
Main duties of the job
Clinical Objectives
- To provide, with colleagues, Adult (and Paediatric) general ENT and specialist otolaryngology care in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
- To provide on-call cover for ENT service on a 1 in 12 rota.
- To support the consultant led ENT surgeon of the week on a rolling basis.
Management responsibilities
- Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
- Participation and involvement in meetings and other business meetings within the ENT service

The SPA allocation is 1.5 for personal CME, audit and revalidation requirements including departmental meetings. Additional SPAs may be allocated for specific agreed objectives for the trust subject to the agreement of the Clinical Director.
This post is intended to provide high level ENT care. All consultants in the department now have 2 Theatre sessions per week with the remaining time dedicated to Clinic work/Administration and teaching. An indicative timetable for this post is shown below. This is subject to alteration prior to start of the job. The peripheral clinics are to be confirmed as the Trust is undergoing an Outpatient Transformation Program with ENT spearheading this novel approach to managing ENT patients post COVID. The aim is to streamline OPD activity and bring care closer to home using technological advances to assist with this.
Support for the Consultants is provided by the middle grade doctors who are timetabled equally between the consultants. There are 3 Foundation Year doctors associated with ENT and 2 GP trainees. There is good nursing support in the outpatient Department .
