Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate keen to pursue a career in geriatric and general medicine. This vacancy has arisen as a result of a gap in the geriatric medicine training programme and maternity leave. The successful applicant will be expected to work on Burghfield ward, which is a 28 bedded mixed sex elderly care ward. The ward (alongside four other acute geriatric medicine wards) is responsible for the care of elderly patients who have been admitted via the acute medical take and are expected to need longer than 72 hours stay in hospital. There is also opportunity to spend time in the falls clinic, rapid access clinic for older patients (RACOP) and review older patients referred by other inpatient medical teams. The Burghfield team works under the supervision of three rotating consultant geriatricians with special interests in falls, movement disorders, dementia and research. The junior team comprises of two FY1, two FY2 trainees, one specialty doctor and a Physician Associate.
Main duties of the job
Attend Consultant and own ward rounds.
Work alongside the Consultant to provide expertise to the frail older patients under the care of the surgical teams
Gather collateral history from patients and their families or GP
Work alongside the multidisciplinary team to help patients to achieve their rehabilitation goals
Attend and contribute to the 'best interest meetings' with families of patients with cognitive impairment to plan for future care
Review Elderly Care ward referrals from other specialties as per rota
Attend RACOP (Rapid Access Clinic for the Older Person) as per rota
Attend weekly falls clinic on Tuesday afternoons.
