Job summary

This is a fixed term contract for 6 months for a 8 PA post for a Specialist in Paediatric Ophthalmology at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking to appoint a skilled and motivated Specialist in Paediatric Ophthalmology to add value and expertise to complement our existing team of ophthalmologists.

The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Ophthalmology service with the present consultants and SAS.

Main duties of the job

This post involves active participation in the busy Paediatric Ophthalmology service across all sites of the Trust, including clinic, refractions and casualty clinics. There is no regular commitment for theatre lists. However this can be considered as an option depending on surgical experience of candidate.

The Paediatric Ophthalmology service has an experienced team of Orthoptists, Optometrists & Nurses from whom the successful candidate will have full support.

The appointees may also have responsibilities for inpatient cases and on-call as well as appropriate liaison with relevant allied specialties. Training and supervision is provided by our consultant team and in time the post-holders will be expected to work independently in appropriate areas.

About us

The Ophthalmology Department is part of the Head and Neck Directorate within the Planned Care Group. The department undertakes approximately 7000 day-case procedures per annum and provides approximately 100,000 outpatient attendances and over 20,000 Eye Casualty attendances per annum, serving a population of approximately 1 million. The Ophthalmology department aims to be the lead provider of ophthalmic services for the people of Berkshire, with key roles in urgent eye care, sub-specialist eye care and the management of chronic ophthalmic disease along with important teaching, training and research roles.

Clinical Duties:

  • Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular discussions with colleagues
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
  • Experience/training in full management of Paediatric outpatient clinics, squint surgeries, paediatric refraction & ocular motility tests etc
  • Experience in cataract surgery and General Ophthalmology will be advantageous
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education
  • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  • The post holder will participate in an out of hours Consultant on-call rota, detailed within the job plan section
