Band 7 Advanced Treatment Planning Dosimetrist

The Radiotherapy Physics Section is responsible for providing clinical scientific and technical support to the Berkshire Cancer Centre within the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

As an Advanced Treatment Planning Dosimetrist, the post-holder will work as part of the team providing the Radiotherapy Physics service to the Berkshire Cancer Centre.

You will take responsibility for specific areas in the delivery of the routine service primarily relating to treatment planning and will also contribute to commissioning, service development and academic research as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

To produce both routine and complex external beam radiotherapy treatment plans for individual patients using conformal, IMRT and VMAT techniques, including the use of image fusion and the contouring of organs at risk, in accordance with agreed clinical protocols.

To have the ability to analyse complex external beam radiotherapy treatment plans and make complex judgements regarding treatment parameters and dose effects to the patient ensuring the optimum dose distribution and treatment plan is produced with the best patient outcome.

To independently check and approve external beam radiotherapy treatment plans produced by other members of staff.

To act as an Operator under the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017.

To work hours as necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the work of the Radiotherapy Physics Section. The post holder will occasionally be required to perform duties outside the normal working hours of the Department.

Clinical and Scientific

1/ To produce both routine and complex customised external beam radiotherapy treatment plans for individual patients using conformal, IMRT and VMAT techniques, including the use of image fusion and the contouring of organs at risk, in accordance with agreed clinical protocols.

2/ To produce external beam radiotherapy treatment plans using conformal, IMRT and VMAT techniques for individual patients whose clinical need does not conform to standard protocol. The plans produced will involve the highest level of complexity to achieve the desired treatment outcome.

3/ To analyse external beam radiotherapy treatment plans and make judgements regarding treatment parameters and dose effects to the patient ensuring the optimum dose distribution and treatment plan is produced with the best patient outcome.

4/ To independently check and approve external beam radiotherapy treatment plans produced by other members of staff.

5/ To support the day-to-day organisation and scheduling of work to ensure an effective treatment planning service and the delivery of treatment plans within the agreed timescales.

6/ To provide advice to medical staff on appropriate treatment methodologies and treatment plan options on a patient-by-patient basis. Discuss and agree approaches to create optimum treatment plans.

7/ To provide advice to radiography staff on planning aspects of the treatment and to attend the set-up of patients in both pre-treatment and treatment as required.

8/ To assess and re-plan / recalculate patient treatments as required following changes to the treatment regime or patient shape.

9/ Where there has been an error in patient treatment delivery, to contribute to the investigation and documentation of the error.

10/ To review, update and develop departmental written protocols as required.

11/ To carry out quality assurance of the treatment planning system as required.

12/ To contribute to the commissioning of radiotherapy equipment and the implementation of new techniques and services.

13/ To act as an Operator under the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017.

Professional

1/ Maintain HCPC registration and an agreed programme of CPD.

2/ To ensure mandatory and statutory training (MAST) is kept up to date.

3/ Demonstrate standards of behaviour consistent with the 5 domains of Good Scientific Practice; Professional Practice, Scientific Practice, Clinical Practice, Research and Development and Innovation and Clinical Leadership.

Teaching and Training

2/ To participate in the training of medical and other NHS staff on a range of subjects relevant to the work of the Radiotherapy Physics Section.

3/ To contribute to the provision of training courses and tutorials as appropriate, including the preparation and presentation of lectures on specific topics in Radiation Physics to Medical, Scientific, Technical, Radiography, Nursing and Ancillary staff.

Research and Development

1/ To support and undertake research and development projects including clinical trials within Radiotherapy Physics, disseminating results through presentations, publications and at scientific / clinical meetings as appropriate.

General

1/ When working in other departments, the post-holder will liaise with a wide range of staff including local heads of department, medical staff, radiography staff and nursing staff, adhering to local policies and practices. The post-holder will behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided by the Radiotherapy Physics Section.

2/ Work the hours necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the work, within the flexible working system set up in the Department. In practice the post-holder will, at times, be required to perform duties outside the core working hours of the Department.
