The post offers an amazing opportunity for any candidate wishing to gain experience in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital - an accredited training center, recognised by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM).
Main duties of the job
The objective of the post is to provide solid foundation experience and clinical skills in Emergency Medicine, while benefiting from Consultant-led supervision and guidance, dedicated monthly teaching days, based on the RCEM Emergency Medicine Curriculum, as well as opportunities to participate in Clinical Research and Quality Improvement.
Successful applicants will work in a well-supported and aspirational Emergency Department with a strong focus on education and training. The job will take place in the "Outstanding" Royal Berkshire Hospital Emergency Department which is the highest ranked trust for education in the deanery, having been recognised by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) and the GMC as having an 'Excellent' rating for education.
About us
The RBH is a busy district general hospital serving a population of over 900,000 and our ED sees approximately 140,000 patients per year with 25% of these being under 16 years old. We are a trauma unit operating within the Thames Valley Trauma Network. We have a 24hr cardiac catheterisation service and also run a 24hr stroke thrombolysis service.
Our Emergency Department comprises several well defined zones - Majors and Resus, STAT, Ambulatory, Paediatrics and an adjacent Assessment Unit (EDAU). Adjacent to the main Emergency Department is the ED Minor Injuries Unit (EDMU), staffed by ENPs and Associate Specialists.

The department has a strong emphasis on education of junior doctors, and our ED has received grade A or Excellent from the School of Emergency Medicine Quality Grading.
We are proud to offer a comprehensive teaching programme to junior doctors (training and non-training grades alike), with protected monthly teaching days (every third Thursday of each month), irrelevant of any other Deanery-led teaching activities. Teaching sessions are Consultant-led and based on the RCEM ACCS curriculum. Simulation sessions are incorporated in the programme and are run in the Simulation Centre (SIM) and, when feasible, in real-time in the department.
The post holder will have a dedicated Consultant or Emergency Medicine Specialist as their named Clinical Supervisor, who will guide and support the candidate in their clinical progression, as well as encourage participation in clinical governance activities development of departmental pathways, delivering formal teaching sessions, participation in audit and completing QIPs.
The trust regularly holds regular life support courses (including ATLS, ALS and APLS), as well as a locally developed HITMAN (Hospital Initial Trauma Management) course. Junior doctors are strongly encouraged to attend these courses and obtain provider status, with the future opportunity to become instructors themselves.
Depending on personal requirements, candidates may be offered the opportunity to rotate through relevant specialties (i.e. ICU/ Acute Medicine) for the purpose of clinical skills development or in preparation for entry into specialty training.
