Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Colorectal Surgery at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post. It is a full time appointment but applicants wishing to work part-time will also be considered. There are four existing Consultants in Colorectal Surgery with a further three Emergency Surgery Consultants with a colorectal interest.

The post holder will be expected to take part in the on-call consultant rota for General Surgery. The out of hours on call commitment is 1 in 11. Clinical responsibility and managerial leadership within the Department of General Surgery is shared by the Consultants.

Main duties of the job

The appointee must have FRCS and wide experience in elective and emergency general surgery. The appointee should have had specific training in open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery for benign and malignant conditions. The appointee should be JAG-accredited to undertake diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and should also possess teaching and administrative skills.

The post holder will take part in the full range of colorectal services including the management of colorectal cancer. They will be encouraged to develop subspecialty interests and to share in the responsibility for the management of the pelvic floor service. The new consultant would be expected to have some prior pelvic floor experience and to have an active involvement in all aspects of the pelvic floor service.

Clinical commitments predominantly take place at 3 major sites - Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham, near Newbury, and Bracknell Healthspace in Bracknell. There are also outpatient opportunities at Townlands Hospital in Henley-upon-Thames

About us

Our catchment area extends as far as Hungerford in the west to Bracknell in the east, part of Hampshire to the south and Henley on Thames and parts of Oxfordshire to the north. The population is expanding and stands at approximately 600,000. Although the general socio-economic indices are good, there are significant areas of urban deprivation, particularly in Reading and rural poverty in the far west. The Trust bed numbers currently stand at 793 inpatient beds (627 acute, 46 paediatrics and 120 maternity) and 204 day beds/spaces.

Facilities are those associated with a large District General Hospital. The Trust organises its structure to facilitate clinical leadership and to enable a meaningful clinically led management structure. The Trust is organised around 3 Clinical Care Groups each led by a Consultant and Care Group Board
