About us

About the Department

The Royal Berkshire Hospital Gastroenterology department delivers outpatients, endoscopy and inpatient service. In addition to general gastroenterology, we provide specialist inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, hepatology and viral hepatitis clinics run jointly with specialist nurses whilst delivering cancer performance standard for upper and lower gastrointestinal services.

Endoscopy: The trust runs a modern purpose-built 5 room endoscopy unit with x-ray facilities in one of the rooms. Two endoscopy rooms are also at West Berkshire Community Hospital. The units perform almost 10,000 procedures a year and offers the full range of endoscopic modalities including diagnostic and therapeutic, upper and lower GI endoscopy, push enteroscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP. The unit is a screening centre for the National Bowel Cancer Screening programme and has recently been JAG re-accredited. In addition to hospital-based medical staff, the unit is staffed by a GP practitioner, a research fellow and 3 nurse Endoscopists. Endoscopy training is a high priority and reduced points training lists and active participation with JETS are strongly encouraged. Emergency Endoscopy is currently performed in theatre and is provided for by the Consultant delivered out of hours rota.
