About The Department

Pain Medicine Department

The department is a trauma informed holistic service that is integrated with the community pain services (IPASS). It is able to offer a wide range of pain management therapies both non-pharmacological / non-invasive to trials of medications/interventions where appropriate. We run a multidisciplinary pain clinic where clinical psychology and physiotherapy services are provided. The clinic nurses provide teaching and support for patients. Acupuncture and TENS clinics are offered as well as pain management programmes.

The unit has been instrumental in setting up a national award winning community Pain Service (IPASS), with good integration across primary and secondary care and is actively involved in the redesign of MSK services as part of the local area West Berkshire Integrated Care system (ICS). It is the only Pain service in the UK with clinical leadership and oversight of the regional LongCOVID service for Berkshire West, which is an integrated model as well.

The acute pain service is a well-established part of patient care in the Trust. Currently there are two consultant led acute pain ward rounds per week. A team of five pain nurses work to improve the provision and supervision of epidurals, PCAs and nerve infusions in the trust. In addition, the pain team are involved in teaching staff the concepts of pain management, including the care of ward-based epidurals, and are available for advice on pain relief throughout the Trust during the week. A Transitional Pain service has also been piloted for the last year and is one of the first in the region.

There are regular clinical governance meetings within the Pain Management Unit. The unit has a strong and active research base and has links with Reading University and its department of neuropsychology (CINN). It is a recognised research site for international Multicentre trials and there are many opportunities to develop research interests with a supportive and well-recognised trust R&D network and the new Thames Valley Clinical Trial Unit.

Teaching and Training

The formal programme of further education includes:

  1. i) Bimonthly study / clinical governance half days involving the entire department. These include Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical presentations, journal reviews, critical incident / near miss reports, guideline presentations and complaints received.
  2. ii) Weekly trust Grand RoundsThe Trust Education Centre is on the Royal Berkshire Hospital site and has a comprehensive library and full facilities for teaching and further learning. All staff are encouraged to participate in research and audit projects.

There is an expectation that all consultants will participate in trainee education and training, both in theatre and through running tutorials, viva practice etc. This is an important aspect of the job - Reading attracts high calibre trainees, has a good exam success record and accommodates medical students from Oxford.

Departmental Meetings

The department fully participates in the trust Clinical Governance arrangements and utilises the RCA critical incident monitoring system and departmental guidelines to aid improvements in-patient care. There are monthly multidisciplinary team meetings and bimonthly clinical governance meeting. The Department is actively involved in the trust QI approach as well.

FacilitiesThe Pain management unit is self-contained and has dedicated consulting rooms for three consultants, allied health professionals and clinical nurses. Approximately 950 new patients are seen a year. There are treatment areas for five patients having invasive procedures. There are additional rooms for the pain management programme, and the pain physiotherapists/psychologists, and associated secretarial support in offices within the unit.
