Rushey Midwifery Lead Unit Ward Manager- Band 7

The applicant will be responsible for the day to day managerial running of the Midwifery Led Unit.

  • The post-holder works as an expert practitioner and is responsible for the delivery of patient-focused programmes of care.
  • The post-holder displays excellent communication and leadership skills, and is responsible for the day-to-day line management of the team for which he/she is responsible.
  • They will also be a proactive member of the Senior Team in Maternity.
  • They will have managerial responsibility for the management of Band 6 Midwives, Band 5 /6 Rotation Midwives, MSW and Ward Clerks who are employed on the Midwifery Led Unit

The Manager will work within Intrapartum team to:

  • Promote normal birth and midwifery skills
  • Work collaboratively with the MDT to provide safe, Woman centered care on the Midwifery Led Unit.
  • Work closely with the Practice Education team to support junior members of the team with on-going learning and training.
  • They will deputise for the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement.
  • This will require excellent leadership, managerial and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner to provide and coordinate the highest standard of care for women and whilst managing the Midwifery Led Unit

The post holder will work together with the intrapartum Led for Service improvement to assist in identifying gaps in areas of the service and to develop strategies to address these.

The post holder will support the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement and Matron to deliver all aspects of running a service including how money and resources are used to deliver better, affordable healthcare and be involved in any new developments.

The post holder will be working as a key member of a multi-professional team and will display excellent communication and leadership skills.

She/he will work with the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement to ensure staff deliver a level of service that is equitable, evidence-based and consistent with the recommendations of all relevant reports and guidelines.

She/he must be confident in the delivery of normal midwifery care and to identify when referral to an obstetrician is required, supporting less experienced midwives in acquiring these skills.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership by example.
  • Managerial responsible for Band 6 Midwives, Band 5 /6 Rotation Midwives, MCA, MSW and Ward Clerks who are employed on the midwifery led unit
  • Ensure that individual performance review and personal development plans are completed for each staff member and follow HR polices. Provide clear feedback to team members in a way that is conducive to maintaining and improving performance. Work closely with the Employee Relations Department as appropriate. Responsible for ensuring that any concerns highlighted in these performance reviews are fed back to the Lead Midwife and implement any actions required.
  • Responsible for the management of staffing rotas on the Midwifery led unit. They will ensure effective skill-mix and appropriate caseload management at all times. They will ensure that the lead midwife reviews the rotas and rota management follows the trust processes. To effectively manage annual leave by understanding the Trust leave policy.
  • To function as part of the team of senior managers ensuring the day-to-day running of the maternity unit and undertake coordination of the maternity unit, following guidelines and escalating concerns to the Midwifery leads, Matron, Head of Midwifery, Director of Midwifery or in their absence the Site Manager, Executive on call.
  • Promote/ develop and maintain a culture within clinical environment which challenges and questions practice, and promote the quality of thinking amongst practitioners.
  • Will work closely with the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement.
  • Deputising for Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement when required.
  • Demonstrate specialist expertise and professional knowledge acquired through post registration academic, clinical, leadership and management development. Works as a role model for professional practice and understands the impact of poor performance.
  • Work with the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement , Matron and infection control champions to support surveillance, auditing and implementation of National and local guidelines/protocols, in particular those concerning infection control, privacy & dignity.
  • In conjunction with the Intrapartum Midwifery Lead for Service Improvement , Matron and other deputy ward managers/Director of Midwifery / Practice Educators, develop and monitor midwifery performance and clinical outcomes to improve and develop high standards of patient care. Place the womans experience at the core of service delivery. Monitor and audit the quality of care through a range of strategies, including risk management incident reporting, complaints, research and effectiveness monitoring and clinical audit.
  • Maintain standards of conduct to sustain public confidence in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Midwives Rules, and Midwives Code of Practice and Trust policies.
