Job summary

This post is for two full-time Physician Associates in General Paediatrics.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital Paediatric Department covers a large child population of around 125,000 and 5800 deliveries. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 16 cots and 4 funded intensive care cots. There is also a transitional care arrangement for convalescing infants.

There are two General Acute Paediatric Wards, Lion and Dolphin. Dolphin Ward has 20 beds including a 4 bed High Dependency Unit and Lion Ward 18 beds including two oncology suites with accommodation for parents. The two wards are adjacent to each other and are run together. They take medical, surgical and orthopaedic patients.

There is also a Paediatric Day Bed Unit, Kempton, which has 10 beds. All acute GP referrals are seen in the Paediatric Emergency department. All walk in paediatric patients are seen by the A&E team and referred to paediatrics if they need admission.

Main duties of the job

The normal shifts are day shift 08:30 to 17:00, long day 08:30 to 21:30, and weekend long day 08:30 to 21:30 hours.

The post-holder will cover paediatrics this includes ward cover, GP Pathway patients, Paediatric Observation Bay and daybed patient ward. As experience increases, they will be opportunity to develop general paediatric outpatient clinic skills,

  • Under direct and indirect supervision responsible for the care of CYP on the acute children's wards and daybed patient, ward.
  • Under direct and indirect supervision, cover the paediatric observation bay on a shift basis, providing medical support to all patients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Full clerking of patients to include assessing and examining and ordering appropriate investigations, interpreting investigation results and recommending treatment accordingly.

  • To conduct ward rounds with the team, assessing and examining patients and facilitating clinical plans under the supervision of doctors.
  • To be able to establish differential diagnosis, making appropriate treatment plans.
  • Undertake pre and post-operative assessment and follow management plan.
  • Record the history and physical condition and ensure accurate and comprehensive medical records are maintained using appropriate written and electronic documentation according to Trust guidelines.
  • To be actively involved in patient care, liaising with ward staff and other members of the clinical team as required.
  • Initiation of Basic/Advanced life support in patients.
  • To be able to prioritise caseload of patients with a range of complex illness and needing different treatment.
  • To treat patients and their family members using a high degree of empathy and advanced communication skills.
  • To review patients for discharge and prepare appropriate documentation of their admission and in-patient stay for the GP.
  • To participate in Multi-disciplinary meetings
  • To carry out procedures which will include; ECG, Venepuncture, IV cannulation, Blood Gas sampling and analysis, Urinary catheterisation, NG Tube Placement, Injections.
  • Be involved in child protection cases, referrals, MDT reviews, maintaining records.
