Main duties of the job
We are currently looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Coding Analyst (ACC) to join our centralised Clinical Coding Team, committed to providing accurate and timely coded data, for use by the Trust and secondary users. This is a permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week) office office, hybrid or home based clinical coding role
There is a requirement to attend the Royal Berkshire Hospital site in Reading on an ad-hoc basis at the request of the management team.
The clinical coding department of Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for determining the clinical coding of around 11,000 episodes of care per month. The Trust provides a full range of hospital specialties, supplemented by a significant number of regional and national specialist services.
The trust has a fully electronic medical record (Cerner EPR) and all clinical coding is undertaken from electronic source documentation.
About us
Candidates will be required to demonstrate an extensive understanding of ICD-10 5thEdition and OPCS4.9classifications, as well as a thorough understanding of National Clinical Coding standards and conventions. All applicants will need to possess the Accredited Clinical Coding qualification and have experience of clinical coding across a wide range of specialities in an acute NHS Trust setting. A good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology is also required.
Candidates will be required to take and pass a 2 hour practical clinical coding assessment should they reach the second stage of the interview process.

To support the provision of timely and accurate coding. Providing support and guidance to less experienced colleagues, identifying problems with documentation provided for coding. Liaising with the Coding Auditors and Clinicians to confirm appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes where national guidance is unclear. Using experience to promote awareness and understanding of clinical coding process and identify service improvements.

Responsibilities
Service Quality
- To assist in resolving coding queries as raised by members of the Clinical Coding team, sharing expertise and assisting in the interpretation of complex information ensuring national standards are met.
- To act as liaison point with designated coders to discuss coding issues, and to provide advice on clinical documentation.
- Undertake routine and complex clinical coding using judgement to translate complex cases whilst achieving high levels of accuracy.
- To liaise with clinical/audit staff to reach a firm decision as to diagnosis and procedure to be coded. This may require advising and agreeing on sequencing of coding to help provide quality data for the Trust
- Liaise with clinical staff and administration staff throughout the Trust to locate and collate all appropriate source material.
- Assist in reviewing coding processes problems to continually improve coding quality and timeliness
- Ensure all queries raised by other Trust staff are resolved promptly and effectively, or where appropriate are referred to the Clinical Coding Auditors/Coding Services Manager or Head of Clinical Coding Services.
- Accompany where necessary the Coding Auditors to discuss coding issues relevant to areas of expertise.
- Provide day to day support for less experienced coding staff to assist with problem resolution
- Support the use of local coding policies which impact on medical staff and other clinicians as defined by the Trusts Coding Policy
- Give feedback on coding and documentation queries to the coding management team.
- To communicate complex coding rules to less experienced coding staff and allocating work between the team to achieve maximum coding assurance
- Undertake regular continued professional development to ensure familiarity with new NHS Digital coding requirements.
- Attend mandatory training sessions including the Foundation Course and Mandatory 3 year refresher Course
