Job summary
We are looking for qualified sonographers (including vascular trained) to join our team where you will be responsible for providing a high-quality ultrasound service within your area of clinical competence.
You will be joining a well established sonographer team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The team undertakes a wide variety of examinations including abdominal, gynaecology, obstetrics, vascular, MSK and head & neck across three departments. Each specialism is led by a Specialist Advanced Practitioner Sonographer (AfC Band 8A).
Working within the department protocols and seeking advice as and when necessary from our supportive team of Sonographer Clinical Leads and Consultant Radiologists, you will be accountable for your own professional actions and will also have the opportunity to help shape the workforce of the future by contributing to our extensive sonographer training programme.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your own scope of practice. With our recent appointment of a Consultant Sonographer, we now have a service which encompasses the levels of practice and roles outlined in the Sonographer Career Framework (Apprentices, Practitioners, Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Practitioners). Our vision is to further shape and develop our workforce providing increased opportunities for sonographers wanting to progress clinically and professionally for the benefit of our patients.
Main duties of the job
Undertake examinations in ultrasound, using established directorate and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures.
Select imaging modalities and techniques appropriate to the needs of the patient.
Produce diagnostic reports, that are clear and concise in line with the departmental guidelines, policies and procedures.
Utilise CRIS and PACS to maintain the electronic management of a patient throughout their time in the department and enter required data as specified in the department policy.
Develop and maintain effective dialogue between patients, departmental staff and all referring clinical areas, and to recognise and adapt to barriers in effective communication.
Provide information and advice to patients, relatives and other medical staff about the examinations undertaken and reports issued.
Communicate to patients and visitors in an empathic and reassuring manner to enable the ultrasound examinations to be undertaken and diagnosis or treatment to be provided.
Compile a personal and professional portfolio alongside the PDR process and undertake reflective practice.
Assurance Programme and be involved in future developments.
Monitor the quality of own work and that of others in own area and alert manager to quality issues.
Be involved in the development and review of policies, protocols and guidelines in each designated area by cascading up-to-date knowledge learnt through the relevant professional bodies.

- BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent healthcare professional qualification
- Pg Dip Medical Ultrasound from a CASE accredited course or Applications will be considered with Pg Cert Medical Ultrasound if alongside extensive post-qualification experience relevant to the service. Qualifications must be from a CASE accredited ultrasound course or equivalent (via UK ENIC as required).
- Evidence of actively maintaining a CPD portfolio
- HCPC registration (or equivalent AHP regulated register), or relevant PSA accredited voluntary registration e.g. RCT.
Desirable
- Evidence of post graduate level study.
