The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Specialised Clinical Chemistry & Toxicology department at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. This ISO 15189 accredited department provides an analytical toxicology service to hospital physicians, pathologists and Coroners across England and Wales, as well as a toxic metal/trace element and therapeutic drug monitoring service throughout the SYB partnership and other NHS trusts.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry, and hold current registration with the HCPC (Band 5/Band 6 BMS). If applying for a Band 6 role, candidates will have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or be ready for assessment.

  • Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.
  • Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
  • Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results are produced for patients.
  • To be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision.
  • Assist in monitoring quality standards, perform audit as directed in line with service needs.
  • Monitor stock levels and assist senior members of staff with ordering and organising stock as required.
  • Participate in regular CPD activities to maintain up to date knowledge and experience

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.
