Junior Clinical Fellow in Oncology

Job summary

This post commences ASAP for a fixed term period of upto 12 months with an end date of 04th August 2026. Appointments to these posts will be at FY2/CT1 level dependant on previous NHS experience and evidence of completion of FY2 competencies signed off within the NHS.

You would be joining the junior doctor team and assisting in the day-to-day management of inpatients on our three wards and acute assessment unit. There will also be the opportunity to attend chemotherapy and radiotherapy clinics for educational purposes.

A basic medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent, full registration with the GMC and a valid ALS certificate at the time of application are essential. MRCP part 1 is a desirable criteria for this post. Successful completion of Foundation 2 competencies in the UK will be factored in for any appointment at CT1 level.

In addition, we require a minimum of 06 month's experience of working in the NHS in an NHS hospital, with at least 4 month's clinical experience in the field of oncology. The appointed candidate will have a keen interest in oncology.

The post does not award a national training number. If the appointee doesn't hold the right of residence in the UK, sponsorship will be required. This post is ideally suited to doctors taking a break between FY2 and IMT, or at the end of IMT prior to specialist training.

Main duties of the job

You would be joining a junior doctor team of 10, based across 3 wards and our acute assessment unit. Duties include assisting in the day-to-day management of inpatients, clerking acute and elective oncology admissions, management of oncological emergencies, attending ward rounds and prompt completion of e-discharge summaries. There would be the opportunity to attend outpatient chemotherapy and radiotherapy clinics for educational purposes.

There are several educational opportunities in Oncology, including weekly Oncology teaching, a fortnightly medical educational meeting, Swartz Rounds every two months and a weekly journal club run by registrars. There would be the opportunity to develop management skills by attending various meetings, including the Junior Doctors' Forum, Drugs and Therapies Committee and Radiotherapy Guidance.

The hours will be Monday to Friday 9:00 - 17:30. There is no on-call associated with this work. Your rota will involve clinical ward-based working in Acute Oncology 4 days a week with 1 day a week protected for personal development. You would be supported in developing project work (audit/quality improvement projects/teaching) during your personal development day by a consultant oncologist acting as your educational supervisor. We would be keen that you attended courses, gained oncology knowledge and built a strong portfolio to support an application towards oncology as a future career option during your placement with us.
