Job summary

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Science Assistant to join our team in the Specialised Clinical Chemistry & Toxicology department at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. This ISO 15189 accredited department provides an analytical toxicology service to hospital physicians, pathologists and Coroners across England and Wales, as well as a toxic metal/trace element and therapeutic drug monitoring service throughout the SYB partnership and other NHS trusts.

Main duties of the job

o To deliver scientific/ technical procedures under the direction of the responsible healthcarescientist practitioner.o Performs a number of healthcare science / scientific activities, under the indirect supervision/direction of a suitably qualified practitioner.o Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.o Store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures.o Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users includingtelephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.o Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.o Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.o Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies.o Maintains clinical records in relation to activities carried out and may input/ interrogate testresults of others.

Essential

  • GCSE at Grade C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus Significant laboratory experience or Extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline

Further Training

Essential

  • Experience of using computer systems including data input.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with a hospital laboratory LIMS system
  • Experience of the pre and post analytical phase of a hospital laboratory.

Special Skills/Aptitudes

Essential

  • Evidence of effective time management skills and a methodical approach
  • Keyboard and Basic IT skills
  • Have an awareness of Health and Safety Issues
  • Effective communication skills written and oral
  • Evidence of good manual dexterity
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time

Experience

  • Understanding of the role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant in a diagnostic laboratory.
  • Ability to follow and work to Standard operating procedures
