Job summary

The Urology Nurse Specialist (UNS) delivers specialised urology services within the Spinal Injuries Centre, collaborating with Consultant Urologists and Urology Nurse Specialists to enhance patient care. This role involves providing clinical nursing advice, education, and leadership while managing an independent caseload in nurse-led urology clinics. The UNS acts as a clinical expert, offering support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.

The UNS ensures patients receive relevant information about their conditions and access to support groups. Working with multi-disciplinary teams, the specialist aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with lifelong conditions and contributes to the development of Urology Services within the Spinal Injuries Centre, facilitating smooth transitions between primary and secondary care.

Additionally, the UNS designs and delivers training programmes for staff and patients, promoting continual improvement in patient care through research and evidence-based practice. Collaborating within the multi-disciplinary team, the UNS ensures optimal care throughout the patient's pathway in Urology and Spinal Cord Injury, addressing the complexities of the patient journey.

Main duties of the job

  • Collaborate with clinical nurse specialists and Consultant Urologists to provide a comprehensive urology service.
  • Serve as a point of contact for medical staff, patients, and carers seeking urological advice.
  • Manage a follow-up caseload in nurse-led urology outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in managing urological waiting and theatre lists for efficient resource allocation.
  • Prevent unnecessary admissions through effective communication with patients, GPs, and Community Nurses.
  • Assess care needs and develop, evaluate, and set standards for care programmes.
  • Ensure continuity of care between hospital and community services.
  • Perform specialist procedures, including catheter changes and managing urinary stomas.
  • Offer specialist advice to other wards and departments regarding Cauda Equina patients.
  • Coordinate treatments and investigations for patients with bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction.
  • Empower patients and carers through holistic assessment, education, and counselling.
  • Develop and maintain nurse-led specialty clinics, including ordering investigations and referrals.
  • Provide knowledgeable support for patients with urinary prostheses.
  • Conduct regular ward rounds with the multi-disciplinary team, documenting interventions.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control policies and safe drug administration.
  • Deliver patient education and in-house training for the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Participate in audits and promote evidence-based practice within the service.
